Oensingen – Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Oensingen
Oensingen is a municipality and the capital of the Gäu district in the canton of Solothurn. Travellers will find several distinct themes to explore: Neu-Bechburg Castle, with its more than 750-year history; the architectural history of St. George’s Parish Church; recurring events; and a mountain landscape shared by Oensingen and Balsthal. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether cultural history, a specific festival date or the landscape should be the focus of your visit.
Neu-Bechburg Castle and St. George’s Parish Church
Neu-Bechburg Castle overlooks Oensingen from above. Tours of the castle can be booked on request; public events take place approximately from mid-April to mid-November. These are two different timeframes to consider when planning: a tour is booked on request, while public events take place within an approximate seasonal window.
St. George’s Parish Church is protected at cantonal level. Its choir dates from 1644; a predecessor building was already mentioned in 968. This gives you a sense of the long architectural history without attributing both dates to the same phase of construction.
Events with different schedules
The solstice celebration takes place every three years and keeps an old tradition of sun worship alive in Oensingen. Its fireworks last about 60 minutes, and the event features more than 100 bonfires on the heights. Its three-year cycle sets it apart from the events that recur annually in the town.
Zibelimäret takes place every year on the last full weekend in October. Since 1968, it has represented living tradition, regional ties and cultural exchange. The autumn market offers a variety of specialities and plenty of onions, especially in braided bunches. The two events therefore differ not only in frequency but also in focus: one is an autumn market featuring specialities and onions, while the other is a celebration with fireworks and bonfires on the heights. Check the specific event dates before your trip.
Landscape and hiking routes
The “Ravellenflue and Chluser Roggen” mountain landscape lies approximately half in the territory of Oensingen and half in the municipality of Balsthal. Its significant geological features and rich biodiversity are the reasons it was included in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance. The landscape is therefore not attributed to Oensingen alone, but is shared with Balsthal.
A hiking map published by the Oensingen municipal corporation features ten varied routes to Oensingen’s local mountain and through the surrounding area. When choosing a route, you can consider whether you are looking for trails to the local mountain or routes through the surrounding area.
Getting your bearings during your stay
Oensingen station is served by SBB trains and the Oensingen-Balsthal Railway (OeBB). Since the metre-gauge Niederbipp–Oensingen connection was rebuilt, the station has also been served by Aare Seeland mobil since 2012. When planning your journey, you can choose transport that suits the focus of your trip: an event date, cultural history or the landscape.
