Freienbach: Frauenwinkel, trails and Ufnau Island
Accommodation in Freienbach
Freienbach between lakeside landscapes and history
Freienbach is a municipality in the Höfe district of the canton of Schwyz; Pfäffikon SZ is its largest locality. Protected lakeside landscapes, trails and archaeological evidence are among the defining themes for travellers. Frauenwinkel, Ufnau Island and the Hurden Rosshorn archaeological site appeal to different interests in nature and history. When deciding whether to visit Freienbach, you can therefore consider whether you are most interested in observing nature, walking a route, visiting an island or discovering traces of early crossings.
Frauenwinkel and the Lake Zurich landscape
Frauenwinkel is the largest contiguous nature reserve on Lake Zurich. Its open landscape is also the last large undeveloped stretch of lakeshore on the lake; the area also has the largest reed bed on Lake Zurich. These features give this natural area a character of its own, distinct from the archaeological themes found nearby.
The Frauenwinkel nature reserve is a few minutes’ walk from Pfäffikon SZ railway station. From the birdwatching tower below the Steinfabrik site, you may be able to see reed buntings in spring and hear great reed warblers in the reeds. These sightings are seasonal and cannot be guaranteed; for travellers interested in nature, the possibility of seeing or hearing different birds can be an appealing feature.
Circular trails and planning your time
The Freienbach–Pfäffikon circular trail starts at Freienbach SBB railway station and runs close to the lake. It is 5.0 km long, has 92 m of elevation gain, takes about 1.25 hours and is rated moderate. Its length, elevation gain, approximate duration and difficulty rating give you specific details for planning your day. Along the trail, there are benches, a forest sofa, barbecue areas and viewpoints where you can stop and enjoy the scenery.
Another route is the Frauenwinkel–Luegeten circular trail, which starts and ends at Pfäffikon SZ railway station. The starting point is therefore another useful difference when comparing the two routes. The Freienbach–Pfäffikon circular trail starts at Freienbach SBB railway station, while Pfäffikon SZ is both the starting point and the destination of the Frauenwinkel–Luegeten circular trail. Plan around the route in question rather than assuming that the information describes a single combined route.
Ufnau Island and its history
Ufnau Island, also called Ufenau, is a nature reserve in Lake Zurich. From April to October, it can be reached by boat from Pfäffikon SZ in about ten minutes. As this service is seasonal, it is worth checking the timetable for your planned visit. A lakeside path goes all the way around the island in about half an hour. For planning your time, the approximate boat journey and the time given for the lakeside path are separate estimates.
A building on the island also bears witness to its long history: the present-day parish church of St Peter and Paul stands on the foundations of a Gallo-Roman temple. Ufnau thus combines protected nature reserve status with a specific archaeological landmark. The church and the lakeside path offer different ways to explore the island.
Hurden Rosshorn: an archaeological route
Piles and structural timbers from various bridges and walkways, dating from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, have been documented at Hurden Rosshorn. The site is an archaeological route, not a settlement site. It lies in the shallow strait between Freienbach-Hurden and Rapperswil. The strait between Rapperswil and the Hurden peninsula has been used as a crossing for 5,000 years. This distinction helps put the site in context: the focus is on traces of crossings over the strait, not the remains of a place where people lived.
