In Flühli, trails through the landscape meet a rich glassmaking history. The Chessimätteli suspension bridge, Chessiloch waterfall and Kneipp circular trail offer different destinations and distances. When planning, it is worth distinguishing walking times from trail lengths: the footpath to the suspension bridge is a different point of reference from the information on the local circular trails.

Hiking between the suspension bridge and the waterfall

The Chessimätteli suspension bridge is 65 metres long and crosses the Seebebach 45 metres above the stream. It provides access to 14 hiking routes in the surrounding areas, including Schafmatt, Wasserfallen, Fürstein, Sewenegg, Glaubenberg, Stäldeli, Sattelpass, Hagleren and Sörenberg. Route connections may depend on local trail conditions. From the car park by the water playground in the village of Flühli, a footpath leads to the bridge; the journey is stated to take about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Walking times may vary depending on conditions and trail access.

For a comparison of circular trails: the Flühli–Chessiloch waterfall trail is 8.59 kilometres long and requires a moderate level of fitness. A signposted path also leads from the barbecue and picnic area to Chessiloch waterfall in about ten minutes. Seasonal trail closures may affect access. The distance to the waterfall is therefore a separate, short route estimate and should not be confused with the total length of the circular trail.

Kneipp treatments and time by the water

The easy circular trail to the Schwandalpweiher Kneipp facility starts and ends at Flühli village square and is 4.25 kilometres long. Weather and the season may affect trail conditions and difficulty. The facility is about a 30-minute walk from the village centre; the actual walking time may vary. It includes a Kneipp wading pool, an arm bath, a pouring station, a barefoot path, a relaxation area and a herb garden. As operating arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.

At the Flühli water playground, visitors can pump, dam and spray water. There is a barbecue area next to the playground, with firewood available. Here, too, it is worth checking the latest local conditions before visiting. The two places offer different activities: the water playground is all about enjoying the water, while the Kneipp facility combines several treatments with a relaxation area.

Glassmaking history and places of remembrance

Glass was produced in the Waldemmental from 1723 to 1869; the products made there are now known as “Flühli glass”. The Glassmakers’ Trail follows in the footsteps of the glassblowers who settled in Flühli in 1768. This challenging themed trail is 14.18 kilometres long and starts at the Windtrüeb monument by the village bridge in Flühli. The trail’s length and classification may be revised by the responsible authorities. Information panels also describe the damage to the landscape caused by the high consumption of wood by historic glassmakers.

The Windtrüeb monument by the village bridge commemorates the legendary hero Windtrüeb. It connects a specific place in the village with local lore and also marks the starting point of the Glassmakers’ Trail. Another historical trace leads to Chrage: a spa once operated there thanks to a sulphur spring, and was already mentioned in the Lucerne council records in 1472.

The wider Sörenberg Flühli holiday region

Beyond the village itself, the Sörenberg Flühli holiday region is known for its varied moorland landscapes. In winter, skiing is one of the activities visitors enjoy there; in summer and autumn, visitors can hike through the moorlands. The Sörenberg Flühli holiday region is part of the UNESCO Entlebuch Biosphere Reserve. These seasonal activities and moorlands provide an additional context for planning a trip, while the suspension bridge, waterfall trails and Glassmakers’ Trail are specific destinations in Flühli.
