Samedan: Village Center, River Landscape and Winter Trails
Accommodation in Samedan
Samedan is a village and a political municipality in the Upper Engadine, in the Maloja Region of the Swiss canton of Graubünden. At the western edge of a high plateau, the Inn and the Flaz, which flows from Pontresina, meet; to the west rises the 3,246-meter-high Piz Ot. Here, river scenery meets a mountain backdrop. Historic Engadine houses, trails, ice sports, a mineral bath, and a weekly market offer different highlights for a stay.
Engadine Houses in the Historic Village Center
The historic village center, in Crappun, Crasta, and Surtuor, is home to well-preserved Engadine houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Bay windows and delicate sgraffito designs characterize the buildings. These parts of the village offer a tangible connection to Samedan’s architectural heritage: the visible details are part of the townscape, alongside its historical context. If you are interested in architecture, this offers a different focus from the trails along the Inn and Flaz or the winter activities.
Water Trail, Winter Trail, and Walk
The Inn–Flaz–Flaz Vegl–Inn circuit is known as the Water Trail and is 8.8 kilometers long. Information boards and digital information accompany the route; it is suitable for strollers. Check local conditions before setting out. At 8.8 kilometers, the circuit is longer than the 6.43-kilometer Winter Trail from Samedan to Alp Muntatsch. This winter route offers a nature experience with panoramic views. Another winter walk follows the Inn floodplains back to the village center.
The three route options differ in length, character, and season: a Water Trail with information along the way, a Winter Trail to Alp Muntatsch, and a walk along the Inn floodplains. For your planning, you can check route conditions before setting out and compare the route length with your plans.
Mineral Bath, Arena, and Weekly Market
Samedan Mineral Bath spans five floors and offers bathing and steam rooms with mineral water from its own spring. The rooftop bath offers views of the mountains. The bath thus combines the bathing and steam rooms described here with views of the mountains.
The Promulins Arena offers ice skating, curling, Bavarian curling, and ice hockey; ice sports are seasonal. The arena also has a FIFA-compliant artificial turf pitch and offers opportunities for active recreation. Ice sports and the artificial turf pitch are thus separate activity options. If you want to plan your visit around a particular activity, the season is an important consideration for ice sports.
Samedan’s weekly market offers Engadine honey, bread, cheese, agricultural produce, and local souvenirs. The selection ranges from food to keepsakes. Check the market days before visiting to make sure the market fits your travel plans.
Getting There and Winter Temperatures
Rail and road routes from several directions meet in Samedan: from St. Moritz in the southwest, from Valposchiavo via the Bernina Pass in the south, and from the Lower Engadine in the northeast. Engadin Airport in Samedan is the regional airport of the Engadine and serves as a base for helicopters, airplanes, gliders, and flight training. Visitors can watch helicopters, jets, gliders, as well as snow-clearing and fire-fighting vehicles there.
In clear weather, Samedan’s valley location can get very cold in winter; temperatures below −20 °C are then considered almost commonplace. This is attributed to an inversion weather pattern. Frost can also occur outside the depths of winter: in Samedan, temperatures fall below 0 °C on 260 days a year, and even in July there are around five frost days on average. If you are choosing when to travel, these temperature patterns are a useful consideration; warm clothing may be worth planning for.
Your choice can therefore be guided by the activities you actually plan to do. When comparing hotel offers, check the details for the specific rooms and services.
