Soglio Gr lies on a natural mountain terrace overlooking the valley floor. The panorama includes the Val Bondasca and pointed peaks over 3,000 metres high, most of which are considered snow-covered. Extensive chestnut forests stretch directly below the village. The village setting combines views of the mountains with historic buildings and a landscape that continues below the terrace.

Historic Buildings and Garden

In the village centre stand palaces belonging to the von Salis family, including buildings dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Hotel Palazzo Salis, also known as Casa Battista, is classified as an A-category property under the Swiss inventory of cultural property protection. ICOMOS named it “Historic Hotel of the Year” in 1998; in 2004, it was among the founding members of Swiss Historic Hotels.

The history of S. Lorenzo Church can also be traced over several centuries. It was first mentioned in 1354; the lower part of the adjoining tower dates from the Romanesque period. Two side altars were added during an extension in 1471. The parish joined the Reformation in 1552. The church acquired its present appearance during a renovation in 1735.

The historic garden of Palazzo Salis was laid out geometrically in its oldest known form and dates from the 18th century. Native and exotic trees, including a sequoia, were added in the following century. During the summer season, from June to October, the garden is open in fine weather. Check whether it is open before your visit, as opening is weather-dependent.

La Streccia in Gassa d'la Streccia comprises three buildings that were first opened to the public in 2017 as part of an open day. From 2017 onwards, cultural events, photo exhibitions and guided tours were held there. The exhibition in the forge at La Streccia includes photographs by Albert Stumpf and is titled “The Bregaglia in 1911”. Before visiting, check whether the exhibition is currently on view.

Trails and Travel Planning

The Sentiero Panoramico runs from Casaccia to Soglio along the sunny side of the Val Bregaglia. It passes Lake Löbbia and then continues through coniferous and birch forests towards Roticcio. The Via Bregaglia, by contrast, is designed as a multi-day cultural trail and can be completed in three or four stages. The two trails therefore differ in their described layout: the Sentiero Panoramico connects two named places, while the Via Bregaglia is intended for a multi-day itinerary with stages.

Trails from Soglio lead to the mountain areas of Däir in the west and Tombal, Plän Vest and Cadrin in the northeast. The crossing of Pass da la Duana into the Avers Valley also begins in Soglio. One descent leads to Castasegna, the last village before the Italian border. These different destinations give you specific directions for planning, without implying that all routes have the same destination or follow the same course.

Soglio is served approximately hourly by a PostBus, which connects with the route between Maloja and Chiavenna. As services may change, check the current timetable before departure.
