Castasegna combines striking architectural history with a cultural landscape shaped by chestnut trees. The village is in the political municipality of Bregaglia, in the Italian-speaking part of the canton of GraubĂĽnden. At an altitude of 686 metres, Castasegna has a relatively Mediterranean climate. Palms, fig trees, camellias and grapevines grow in its small, well-kept gardens. This combination of altitude, climate and garden plants gives the place its distinctive character and offers different starting points for planning your trip.

Architecture and Village History

Villa Garbald is the only building by Gottfried Semper south of the Alps. Semper built it between 1863 and 1864 for Agostino Garbald and Johanna Garbald-Gredig. The villa’s artistic features are open to the public at certain times and during events. Check the relevant opening times before your visit.

The main street also tells the story of the village: it is paved and lined with magnificent houses dating from the 17th century. The bell tower of the Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1660. The Church of San Giovanni Battista, near the Maira River, was first mentioned in 1409. These are two distinct historical reference points: the year the bell tower was built and the first mention of the church. Old wash fountains in the narrow paths and lanes are traces of the former farming community.

Borgo Casnàcc was laid out as a fortified village, or Maiensäss (a seasonal Alpine settlement). Small houses, stables and chestnut-drying huts were grouped around a meadow. Today, a stone house belonging to the Fondazione Garbald, another residential building, several stables and various dry-stone walls can be seen. Galleria il Salice opened in the historic part of the village in 2012. The history of language is also part of the village’s character: a Lombard dialect has traditionally been spoken in Castasegna; since the early 20th century, there has also been a German-speaking minority.

Chestnut Forest and Educational Trail

Above Castasegna lies the Brentan chestnut forest, one of the largest cultivated sweet chestnut forests in Europe. Chestnuts shape both the landscape and a local processing tradition: in the Cascine, smaller chestnuts are dried for up to five weeks over a smouldering fire. This traditional method is demonstrated in a model hut in Brentan. Castasegna is also home to centuries-old sweet chestnut trees; their marroni harvest can be seen in autumn.

The chestnut educational trail runs for about two kilometres through the chestnut grove and includes five learning stations. Topics include sweet chestnut processing, tree care, different chestnut varieties and threats to these sensitive plants. Weekly guided walks along the trail are planned for 2026; check the specific dates before your trip.
