If you are looking for a hotel in Pontresina, it is worth choosing your destination according to your interests during your stay: options range from short walking trails to longer valley and mountain routes; there are also ibex-themed activities, winter cross-country ski trails and local history. This lets you weigh up whether you mainly want to explore on foot, experience the mountains or learn about Engadine architecture.

Walking Trails and a Gorge Landscape

The Ibex Promenade is open year-round, about one kilometre long and suitable for pushchairs. Its manageable length makes it a short walking option. The adventure trail at the Ova da Bernina white-water gorge offers a different experience: you can start at any of its stops and walk in either direction. At Plazza Bernina, it includes a 37-metre-long suspended steel walkway over the gorge; the walkway is accessible. If this accessible route is important for your plans, check the facilities before travelling.

In winter, ice climbers scale towering ice columns in the gorge. Whether climbing is possible depends on winter conditions. Gorge experiences therefore vary considerably by season: the circular trail offers a way to explore the landscape on foot, while ice climbing depends on suitable winter conditions.

Val Roseg and Trails into the Mountains

Val Roseg begins right by Pontresina. A trail running along the Rosegbach stream leads up for just over seven kilometres to the glacier panorama near Hotel Roseg Gletscher. The distance gives you an idea of what to expect from a longer hike; conditions can vary seasonally, so check them before making plans. Horse-drawn omnibus rides or private carriage rides offer another way to experience the valley’s natural surroundings. Operators and schedules are seasonal, so it is worth checking the latest dates in advance.

At the entrance to Val Roseg lies Taiswald, a recreational area with walking trails. You can also explore nature there interactively using your mobile phone. Digital features may be updated; if you plan to use this offer, check the latest information in advance. The different trails and experiences offer a range of time commitments, from a walk in Taiswald to a longer route along the Rosegbach stream.

Ibex and Winter Trails

One of the largest ibex colonies in the Alps is located above Pontresina on Languard and at Piz Albris, at an altitude of 3,166 metres above sea level. The number of animals and viewing conditions can change. Free guided tours give interested visitors an insight into the world of the ibex over two to four hours. They are available seasonally; check the dates if you are making specific plans.

The snow-covered Cuntschet circular cross-country ski trail is 3.3 kilometres long. Another trail in the Roseg Valley climbs steadily, with the 3,000-metre peaks of the Upper Engadine rising on either side. The seasonal use of both trails depends on snow conditions. The approach to the La Resgia via ferrata is at the edge of Pontresina, near Hotel Palü; check local conditions before setting out on the mountain route. If you are planning a winter trip, you can choose between a snow-covered circular cross-country ski trail, an uphill route in the valley and views of the surrounding peaks.

Engadine Houses and Local History

Traditional Engadine houses in Pontresina date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are adorned with elaborate sgraffito decorations on their walls. Sgraffito is a scratching technique used to decorate walls. Another distinctive historic building is the Tuor Spagnola: this pentagonal castle tower was built around 1200 from irregular rubble stone and boulders.

The burial church of Sta. Maria contains precious medieval wall paintings, including high-quality Byzantine-Romanesque fragments. The Alpin Museum is housed in Chesa Delnon, a stately Engadine house dating from 1716. It presents the fauna, flora and geology of the Grisons mountains, as well as Alpine culture. Pontresina’s cultural heritage thus spans medieval buildings and wall paintings, the architecture of Engadine houses and the museum’s exhibits.
