Jenaz: Strick Houses, Village History and Trails
Accommodation in Jenaz
Jenaz is a political municipality in the Canton of Graubünden and belongs to the Prättigau/Davos region. If you are looking for a hotel in Jenaz, you can choose where to stay based on your interests: historic wooden houses and church history, trails through forests and the Alps, cycling or regional agriculture. The following insights offer clues to which aspects of the village might suit your travel plans.
Village Centre, Strick Houses and Church
The village centre of Jenaz and Pragmartin are home to decorated old Strick houses bearing numerous house sayings. The “ds Platzhus” is considered one of the largest and most imposing wooden houses in the Prättigau. At the Luzi House, beam ends as wide as a hand extend well beyond the façade. They illustrate the traditional construction of a Strick house and reveal an architectural detail distinct from the house sayings and façade decorations.
The Reformed Church also offers a historical reference point for the village: it was first mentioned as St Peter’s Church in the first half of the 12th century. The choir was rebuilt in 1483, and the nave was remodelled in 1485. The two dates therefore refer to different parts of the building and to two separate alterations.
Trails to the Former Spa and into the Alps
The walking trail to the former Jenaz spa leads from the village through DĂĽrrwald forest to the former spa. There, captured mineral water bubbles into a fountain beside the barbecue area. The trail links the village with a place whose former function as a spa is preserved in its name.
Another trail leads to Alp Larein: it passes through the Walser village of Jenaz and then climbs through Litziwald, Mittelwald and Schlegelwald forests. Check trail conditions locally. In good visibility, the hike from the Fideriser Heuberge to Jenaz offers a view from Alp Nova of the entire Rätikon range on the opposite side of the valley. In winter, when conditions are suitable, a ski tour descent from Glattwang via Alp Larein to Jenaz is another option. Conditions are explicitly part of the route description.
Cycling and Playground
The Jenaz pump track is free to use; wearing a helmet is compulsory. BMX features add to the course on the outer track. A small starting mound makes jumping easier. This information can help you take the pump track’s specific features and the helmet requirement into account when planning your visit.
The Swiss Bike Masters route passes through Pragg-Jenaz and Jenaz. It was considered a classic among mountain bike marathon races in Switzerland and can be divided into day stages. The pump track and this longer cycling route therefore represent different forms of the sport: a facility in Jenaz and a route that also includes Pragg-Jenaz.
The Jenaz playground is designed without barriers and is accessible to everyone. Children with and without disabilities can play together on the same equipment. There is a wheelchair-accessible parking space right next to the playground. These details describe both the design of the play equipment and the location of the parking space.
Getting Here and Regional Products
Jenaz station is an unstaffed Rhaetian Railway (RhB) station. RhB parking spaces and ticket machines are located beside the station. There are plenty of free parking spaces nearby at the Säge car park. Check the station’s facilities and access conditions before travelling.
Regional food production includes a range of dairy products. The Prättigau organic cheese dairy in Pragg-Jenaz processes organic milk from goats, sheep and cows from the region. During the summer months, around 3,800 kg of alpine cheese, as well as alpine butter and Ziger cheese, are produced at Alp Larein. The seasonal information applies to production at this alp, and the quantity of cheese is approximate. During the seasonal alpine grazing period, the Jenaz Alpine Pasture and Dairy Cooperative grazes around 80 dairy cows at the Alp Larein cow pasture.
