Filisur: Landwasser Viaduct and Engadine Village Culture
Accommodation in Filisur
Filisur brings together the Landwasser Viaduct and the Rhaetian Railway’s railway world with a village steeped in history and trails through the landscape. You can focus your trip on the structure and railway history, take a closer look at village houses and churches, or choose a walking route. When looking for a hotel in Filisur, it helps to think in advance about which of these aspects of the village matter for your stay.
Landwasser Viaduct and Railway Experiences
The Landwasser Viaduct is a stone-arch bridge: it is 65 metres high, 136 metres long and has six arches. The Landwasser Express takes you directly from Filisur to a viewpoint at the viaduct. It provides information about the structure, the Albula line and the Rhaetian Railway’s World Heritage site. There is an information kiosk, seating and a barbecue area at the destination. Operating details and facilities may change; check the provider’s latest information before your trip.
Railway themes are also front and centre at Filisur station. The “Filusio” illusion carriage is a converted old railway carriage; its theme is optical illusions relating to various railway topics. The showroom at the station covers the history of the Rhaetian Railway’s UNESCO World Heritage line and the Landwasser Viaduct. Filisur can be reached by the Rhaetian Railway on the UNESCO World Heritage line towards the Engadine. A regular viaduct shuttle runs between Filisur and Alvaneu; operating periods may vary. Check the operator’s latest information before your trip.
Viewpoints and Trails
The Acatos viewing platform is in the forest. From there, you can see the Landwasser Viaduct, the steeply sloping hillside and the Landwasser River. It takes about 25 minutes to walk to the platform from Filisur station. This approximate walking time is a useful reference for planning your time. Another footpath leads from the cantonal road to the viaduct piers and a viewing platform.
The second stage of the Natura Trail Parc Ela 2 runs from Filisur via Crap Furò and Surava to Tiefencastel. It offers a close-up view of the Landwasser Viaduct and descends along the shady banks of the Albula. FiliTour starts either at Filisur station or at the western entrance to the village; a footpath connects the station with the village. As the information about the starting point may change, check the latest route information before setting off.
The 4-Viaduct hike starts at Filisur station, runs through meadows and forests to Wiesen station, and returns to the starting point. The route also crosses a viaduct 89 metres high. The Filisur–Visura winter hike offers a different perspective, with views of the Albula Valley and the village of Filisur. Check the conditions for your planned route before setting out on a winter hike.
Village Character and History
Filisur is listed in the national inventory of cultural property and is considered one of the best-preserved Engadine street villages. The Engadine architectural style shapes the village’s houses. One example is the house at Dorfstrasse 84: it was probably built in the first half of the 16th century and features elaborate façade paintings. The late Gothic Reformed church dates back to a medieval structure; its construction history reaches into the 15th and 17th centuries.
The region’s history also includes structures that bear witness to earlier work: the miners’ house and directors’ house of the former smelting works have been preserved at Bellaluna, near Filisur. Greifenstein Castle ruins were the centre of the Greifenstein lordship, which included Filisur, Bergün, Latsch and Stugl/Stuls. Together with the houses and churches, this historical perspective offers a different way to experience the village from its railway and viaduct themes.
Seasonal Activities in the Surrounding Area
In the wider Bergün Filisur area, winter sports include sledging, skiing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, curling, winter hiking, snowshoeing and ski touring. The wider region’s natural landscape of meadows, forests, streams, mountain lakes and peaks also offers opportunities for trail running and outdoor activities. These activities are found in the wider area, not just in Filisur itself. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between Filisur’s specific railway and village attractions and the seasonal options available across the wider region.
