Alvaneu Bad: Trails along the Albula and local history
Accommodation in Alvaneu Bad
Alvaneu Bad lies on the valley floor on the banks of the Albula; in Romansh, the village is called Alvagni Bogn. It is part of the municipality of Albula/Alvra, in the Albula Region of the Canton of Graubünden. The village’s history is linked to its sulphur springs: the sulphur bath was first described in 1474 and is considered a mineral spa because of its temperature. Its riverside location and connection to the springs reveal different aspects of the village’s landscape and history.
Hiking trails with different destinations
The Albula Waterway starts and ends in Alvaneu Bad. Allow around two and a half hours for the 10.5-kilometre hike. The trail passes sulphur and iron springs and the Landwasser Viaduct. Blue information signs mark the various locations along the entire route. The stated duration is approximate; trail conditions can vary seasonally. Check conditions before setting out on your hike.
The “Power of Nature” hike leads from Alvaneu Bad past the rocky pinnacle of Crap Furo and through the wild Julia nature forest reserve to Tiefencastel. Crap Furo is 1,204 metres high and made of ochre-yellow rauwacke. The destination is a key difference when choosing a route: the Waterway starts and ends in Alvaneu Bad, while the “Power of Nature” hike leads to Tiefencastel. The routes also have different landscape highlights: the springs and viaduct are named stops on one route, while the rocky pinnacle and nature forest reserve feature on the other.
Golf with views of the Landwasser Viaduct
The Alvaneu Bad Golf Club has an 18-hole course at an altitude of 950 metres. The Landwasser Viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway can be seen from the golf course. This offers a different activity alongside the hiking trails, with its own view of the structure. If golf is part of your travel plans, check the current playing conditions in advance.
Winter trails and seasonal planning
The Skateline Albula is an ice trail from Bad Alvaneu to Surava. It runs along the Albula through the snow-covered forest. The Skateline was listed as closed for winter 2025/26; please check availability for later winter seasons. The Bellaluna–Filisur–Alvaneu Bad winter hiking trail is a separate route that follows the Albula from Bellaluna to Alvaneu Bad. This gives you two different types of trail to choose from: an ice trail to Surava and a winter hiking trail ending in Alvaneu Bad.
Church and local history
The Filial Church of the Holy Trinity in Alvaneu Bad brings together several chapters of the village’s history. Construction began in 1630, and the church was consecrated in 1634. In the same year, Hans Greuter from Brixen signed the altarpiece. During the 1854 reconstruction, the former chapel became the choir; a nave and a sacristy were also added. The information about the altarpiece and the building’s alterations tell different aspects of the church’s story.
