Oberschrot
Accommodation in Oberschrot
Oberschrot is a locality in the municipality of Plaffeien. It lies at an elevation of about 855 m above sea level in the hilly country on the northern edge of the Fribourg Pre-Alps. The former municipality covered 5.3 km² and included part of the pre-Alpine hilly landscape. When considering a hotel stay, the winding village layout, the historic Büel farmstead group and the variety of routes are particularly interesting: they show Oberschrot as a destination with its own settlement history and as a place reached or crossed by several routes.
Village Layout and Historic Buildings
The crescent-shaped part of Oberschrot has a varied mix of buildings along two curved streets. At its centre are the schoolhouse and schoolyard, dating from the 18th to the 20th century. Its spatial relationship with Plaffeien is also distinctive: to the east, the two localities are separated by the TĂĽtschbach ravine, while to the west they meet by the church.
Along the road to Plasselb, residential buildings, old farmsteads, a cheese dairy and chalets line the way through Oberschrot. BĂĽel forms a historic ensemble of its own: this part of the village, spared by the fire, comprises farm buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The BĂĽel farmstead group is the only surviving remnant from before the fire; its wooden buildings form a pleasing contrast with the masonry buildings in the new part of Plaffeien.
Some of Büel’s rural character remains in its paved work areas with small outbuildings, as well as in its orchards, meadows and kitchen gardens. These details complete the picture of the historic farmsteads and their agricultural surroundings.
Landscape Between the Ärgera and the Sense
In the central part of the locality, the valley hollow connects the Ärgera valley to the west with the Sense valley to the east. It is drained by the Dütschbach, which flows eastwards to the Sense. This brings the pre-Alpine hilly landscape together with a distinct valley connection in the central part of the locality.
Hiking and Cycling Routes
The Fribourg Pre-Alpine Trail passes through Sankt Ursen and Rechthalten before reaching Oberschrot-Plaffeien. On the stage to Oberschrot-Plaffeien, you can end your hike early and return by bus; there are bus stops in all the villages along the route. If you plan to end your hike early, check the bus connections before setting off.
