Saint Antoni combines village history, ecclesiastical buildings and a landscape that ranges from the hilly zone to the Pre-Alpine mountain zone. If you are interested in cultural heritage and regional development, you will find several themes here: the origins of the village around the Antonius Chapel, the present-day church and other cultural assets listed in the municipal inventory. Agriculture and walking routes also give the village its own distinctive character.

The Antonius Chapel and the History of the Village

Until 1447, there was no settlement at the site of today’s village centre of Sankt Antoni. Later, the settlement on the Schrick developed around the Antonius Chapel. The chapel was built in commemoration of a victory won by the people of Freiburg over the people of Bern in 1448. From the mid-16th century onwards, its name was adopted by the village itself. The history can thus be traced through several stages: from the beginnings of the settlement, through the event that prompted the chapel’s construction, to the transfer of its name.

The present-day church of Sankt Antoni was built in 1893/94; in 1894, the village became an independent parish. Its three choir windows depict the Passion and Resurrection of Christ in abstract form. The windows therefore establish a clear religious focus. Those interested in ecclesiastical architecture and religious imagery can consider the village’s history alongside a specific artistic representation here.

Protected Cultural Heritage

Buildings and other historical features are assigned to different protection categories in the municipal cultural heritage inventory. These include the parish church of Antonius Eremita at Antoniusweg 40 (Category 1), the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Counsel near Bächlisbrunnen 95 (Category 1) and the Sacred Heart Chapel near Burgbühl 50A (Category 2). Also listed are the Maria Schmerzen rock chapel near Burgbühlhölzli (Category 3) and the Reformed Church at Cheerstrasse 22 (Category 2).

The inventory also includes the sandstone quarry near Zum Kehr (Category 3), the Chapel of St James the Elder near Niedermuhren 120 (Category 1), the farmhouse near Obermonten 45 (Category 1) and the Apollonia Chapel near Winterlingen 119A (Category 1). The Way of the Cross from Sankt Antoni to Obermonten is also listed as a cultural asset in protection Category 3. The different entries show that local cultural heritage consists not only of churches, but also includes chapels, a farm, a quarry and a Way of the Cross.

Landscape and Local Character

The area of Sankt Antoni ranges from the hilly zone to the Pre-Alpine mountain zone and has corresponding vegetation. This range gives the landscape a regional context without reducing the village to just one altitude or type of landscape.

Agriculture also shapes the local character: dairy farming remains an important economic sector. The three dairies in Niedermuhren, Sankt Antoni and Schweni process many tonnes of milk every day. Those interested in the rural side of the village will therefore find, alongside churches and historic buildings, a connection to contemporary agriculture.

Walking, Cycling and Excursions in the Wider Region

The walking route from Sankt Antoni to Tafers is about four kilometres long; the walk takes around 45 minutes. For cyclists, Sankt Antoni and Tafers are part of Stage 6 of the Alpine Panorama Route between Thun and Freiburg, which passes through idyllic scenery. The walking route and cycle route thus offer different ways to experience the area.

The Brecca Valley, a glacial trough, lies in the wider region around Saint Antoni. A hike takes just under three hours; an additional loop adds about 1.5 hours. Conditions and access may vary seasonally. The experience in the Brecca Valley also includes the Buvette St-Antoni Brecca and its fondue; its opening arrangements may also vary seasonally. Check the relevant conditions and opening hours in advance if you plan to include these regional offerings in your itinerary.
