Mur (Vully) is in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. For travelers looking for a hotel in Haut-Vully, specific interests can help with planning: would you like your stay to center on a hike with far-reaching views, a picnic at a scenic spot, or winegrowing and history? Mur features several named natural and historical attractions, offering different ways to shape your stay.

Trails, views and picnics

The Chenevières de Guévaux nature reserve is in the village of Mur, on the cantonal border between Vaud and Fribourg. There is a marked visitor trail there. This means that, in addition to the reserve itself, a specific trail is also identified as a nature experience.

If you are considering a hike with a variety of distant views, you can take your cue from “Rando Découverte – Les Panoramas.” The route goes as far as Mur, on the eastern edge of the municipality of Vully-les-Lacs, and then returns to the starting point. It offers views of Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Murten and Lake Biel, as well as the Alps. The tour therefore combines panoramas of several lakes with views of the Alps, while also bringing you back to your starting point.

In the wider area around Mur, Mont-Vully is a hill north of Lake Murten. From there, views extend to the Alps and the Jura, as well as Lake Murten, Lake Biel and Lake Neuchâtel. One specific viewpoint is the Reservoir picnic area, on a rise on Mont-Vully near Mur. From there, you can see Lake Murten and the Jura. Facilities include four grills, two fire pits and a large lawn for picnicking.

The viewpoints offer different perspectives: the hiking route looks out over three lakes and the Alps, while the Reservoir picnic area offers views of Lake Murten and the Jura. If you want to focus on several bodies of water and an Alpine panorama, the route is the right thematic choice. For a picnic with views of Lake Murten and the Jura, the Reservoir area offers a specific combination of scenery and lawn space.

Winegrowing and early history

Château de Mur is also associated with historic winegrowing. A cantonal entry from 2015 describes the estate as a historic vineyard; it included a winemaker’s house and two cellars used for winemaking. Historic winegrowing also included 3.3 ha of vineyards leased to the Wacker family. This area figure adds a specific detail about winegrowing at the time to the history of the buildings.

The archaeological settlement of Chenevières de Guévaux I near Mur tells an even earlier story. Based on archaeological finds and dendrochronological dating, it is attributed to the Early Bronze Age. Its exceptionally good preservation is attributed to alluvial deposits and sand at the foot of Mont-Vully, mainly molasse sand. The settlement thus extends the historical perspective to a period considerably earlier than the winegrowing history of Château de Mur.
