Different themes come into play when choosing Achseten as a travel destination: a protected high moor, the history of Achseten Church and activities in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel in Achseten, it helps to first decide what you want your stay to focus on—nature and scenery, culture, or excursions and trails in the mountains.

High Moor and Mountain Church

The Dälmoos-Achseten nature reserve protects a high moor of national importance, providing a distinctive natural highlight. Achseten Church offers a cultural and historical connection: the small mountain chapel was built in 1938–1939. The church houses a small, remarkably well-preserved organ dating from 1727. It is considered the second-oldest known surviving organ in churches in the canton of Bern.

The church and organ thus represent two different historical periods: the chapel was built in the 20th century, while the instrument dates from the early 18th century. For culturally interested travellers, the organ is a striking detail that points beyond the architecture of the small mountain chapel.

Brandsee and Elsigseeli

Brandsee can be reached in about 15 minutes from the cable-car mountain station. The trail is also well suited to pushchairs and wheelchairs. There are several small fire pits by the lake, with firewood available on site. Swimming in Brandsee is possible from mid-summer, at an altitude of about 1,800 metres. This seasonal detail is important when planning if swimming is to be a focus of your stay.

Elsigseeli is an easily accessible mountain lake where you can take a break or swim. At Brandsee, the route from the mountain station and the fire pits are useful points of reference; at Elsigseeli, the focus is on the opportunity to relax and swim. This makes it possible to plan the kind of lake experience you want based on the features described, without treating the two destinations as the same.

Activities at Elsigen-Metsch and Elsigenalp

The Elsi & Vämpi children's paradise at Elsigen-Metsch has three children's ski lifts and a platter lift. The facilities also include bouncy pillows, a carousel and a Ratrac simulator. On the Krimipass slope at Elsigen, visitors have to solve a tricky case; the Elsigen race slope offers fast descents. These activities differ in their specific focus—from the facilities in the children's paradise to puzzles and downhill runs on the slopes.

The Elsigenalp cable-car toboggan run starts right by the mountain station. It is 3.5 kilometres long and passes through open and wooded terrain. Check current snow conditions when planning. The Höchst–Metschalp winter hiking trail, by contrast, centres on a circular route: it passes through Höchst, Grossi Weid, Eggersweid, Heuzun and Dürrebode before returning to Höchst. The toboggan run is described by its length and two types of terrain; the circular route and sequence of places provide the orientation for the winter hiking trail.

Trails and Scenery in the Surrounding Area

In the wider area around Achseten, a mountain hiking trail leads to a prominent limestone rock band above GrĂĽenewald. The rock band is around 750 metres long, and its cliffs are used for climbing. Elsigenalp offers a different perspective on the landscape: it lies high above the Engstligental, on the way towards Adelboden. Extensive alpine pastures and mountain scenery define the landscape there.

The Elsigenalp–Frutigen panoramic trail descends from the western flank of the Elsighorn to Frutigen along a well-maintained natural-surface road. This makes it quite different from the Höchst–Metschalp loop: the panoramic trail descends to Frutigen, while the winter hike returns to its starting point in Höchst. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

Plan Your Journey and Connections

By public transport, you can travel from Frutigen railway station to Elsigbach via AFA and shuttle buses. The cable-car ride to the Elsi & Vämpi children's paradise takes eight minutes. The route to the Elsigenalp–Frutigen panoramic trail is described as involving a bus to Achseten Church, another bus to Elsigbach and the cable car to Elsigenalp. A reservation is required for the bus journey between Achseten and Elsigbach.

From the Achseten, Kirche stop, the route to the Elsigenalp cable-car valley station includes a winding, very narrow section, which is covered by an on-call bus. Check current connections and reservation procedures before travelling.
