Seedorf lies in the Swiss Plateau, more specifically in the Bernese Seeland, or Three Lakes Region, at the foot of the Frienisberg. If you are looking for a hotel in Seedorf, you can plan your stay around three specific interests: nature at Lobsigensee, outdoor activities around the Frienisberg, or local history through the village museum, church and Lobsigen caves. Each theme gives your trip a different focus.

Nature and Prehistory at Lobsigensee

Lobsigensee is located within the municipality of Seedorf, 100 metres north of Unterdorfstrasse, between Seedorf and Lobsigen. Beaver dams on the Seebach have enlarged the lake. The new ecological values around the enlarged Lobsigensee are protected; the revised protection plan came into force in 2023.

Since March 2019, six lapwings have been observable around Lobsigensee. Their presence is seasonal and variable. If you plan to look for them, you should not count on this as a fixed part of your itinerary. Neolithic finds are also part of the lake’s history: objects found on its surface led to private collections of finds and a small exhibition at Seedorf municipal hall.

Chutzenturm and Cycling Route on the Frienisberg

Chutzenturm is a wooden tower over 40 metres high on the Chutzen in the Frienisberg Forest. The Chutzen is the highest point of the Frienisberg; the tower stands at 820 metres above sea level. Access routes to Chutzenturm are signposted from the “Saurenhorn” and “Baggwilgraben” postbus stops. The best way to reach the tower is by postbus; check the current timetable before setting off. Parking is available at the Försterstein car park and at the forest lodge in Baggwilgraben. You can plan your access using the stops or parking options listed above.

A scenic cycling route around the Frienisberg runs partly through the municipality of Seedorf. If you are planning to cycle, it offers a separate point of interest in addition to the access routes to Chutzenturm. This gives you a choice between a specific route and information about access to the tower.

Village Museum, Church and Lobsigen Caves

The Seedorf Village Museum is located in the attic of the Seedorf municipal administration building. It displays restored everyday objects in recreated living and working spaces; old local customs are brought back to life through hands-on experiences. The combination of objects and reconstructed rooms gives the museum visit a focus on everyday life and tradition.

Seedorf Church offers an insight into architectural history. It was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style as a place of refuge, with high, fortified walls. At the beginning of the 18th century, the choir was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style. The church also has an octagonal late Gothic baptismal font dating from 1582. These features illustrate different periods and styles: the Romanesque church building, the Baroque reconstruction of the choir and the late Gothic baptismal font.

Near Lobsigen, a staircase in the Rebhalde leads to the Lobsigen caves in the sandstone cliffs above the path. The caves were inhabited until the beginning of the 20th century. Their former features included an entrance porch and a small stable. Their historical use complements the themes of the museum and church architecture with examples of earlier forms of housing.
