Rapperswil BE: History and Landscape
Accommodation in Rapperswil
Rapperswil in the canton of Bern lies at an elevation of 520 metres on a fertile plateau between the Seeland and the Lower Emmental. Fruit-bearing fields, green meadows and dark forests shape the surrounding landscape. When looking for a hotel in Rapperswil, you can consider whether you would mainly like to explore the place through its church history, archaeological traces or outdoor activities. These interests give your travel plans a specific connection to the area and help you tailor your stay to your preferred focus.
Church and Historical Traces
Rapperswil BE Church was built between 1860 and 1862 in the Neo-Gothic style. Neo-Gothic revives Gothic architectural forms in a later style; in the canton of Bern, the church is one of the rare rural Neo-Gothic churches. The church is open to visitors and wheelchair-accessible via a ramp at the side entrance. Check access again before your visit.
Near the old and new rectories, two of the four freedom stones mark a medieval sanctuary, that is, a place of church asylum. One stands next to the old rectory on the main road, and the other about 50 metres away in front of the new rectory. Behind the old rectory is a Roman votive stone dedicated to Mercury, the god of commerce.
A fragment of a brick dating from the 1st century AD, bearing the mark of the XI Legion, was discovered in the area around the church hill and Eierhubel. Traces of early settlement also include the artificially raised earthwork “Burg am Hohschwerzibach”. It is considered a local prehistoric monument; its precise date has not yet been established. Another artificially raised earthwork associated with early settlement is located in Zambergwald near Moosaffoltern. The historical layers therefore range from a prehistoric structure that cannot be dated more precisely, through Roman finds and medieval church asylum, to the 19th-century church.
The history of the Rapperswil Louis Gasser AG brickworks also began in 1918: that year, 27-year-old Louis Gasser bought a small hand-operated brickworks in Rapperswil BE. This purchase marked the start of today's brickworks.
Outdoor Activities and Recreation
A Vitaparcours fitness trail is located in Burgerwald, between Rapperswil-Seewil and Wierezwil. It can be used for fitness training, is considered a suitable place for a family outing and is set in an unspoilt natural landscape. Outdoor exercise is therefore another focus for your stay, alongside the church and archaeological traces.
Lyss municipality's mobile pump track is generally available for public use once a year at the Rapperswil school complex. Operating periods vary from year to year. On the circuit, which has numerous bumps and bends, riders build up speed by shifting their body weight and can ride without pedalling. If you plan to use the pump track, check the operating dates for the relevant year before your trip.
Wierezwil forest lodge has an open fire pit and various seating areas outdoors. If these facilities are important to you, check their condition before your visit.
