Eptingen lies at the upper end of the Diegter Valley and is completely surrounded by the Folded Jura. The area was already settled in the 7th century; settlement development proper took place in the early Middle Ages. The village was historically mentioned in 1145 as “Ebittingen,” in 1189 as “Etingen,” and in 1194 as “Eptinwin.” Today, it offers points of interest for visitors interested in the landscape, hiking destinations, and the history of the municipality.

Landscape and trails around Eptingen

Bölcheflue reaches 1,098.9 meters and lies in a hiking area between Eptingen, Waldenburg, and Langenbruck. It is best reached on foot from a parking lot with limited spaces below Chilchzimmer Saddle; the climb takes about 15 minutes. As the number of parking spaces is limited and availability may change, it is advisable to check the parking situation before setting out. Bölcheflue was used as an observation post during the First World War—another historical connection in the landscape.

Another destination is Riedfluh. It is about 1.7 kilometers, or around a 30-minute walk, from the Edelweiss bus stop. The cave-castle ruins lie on the southeastern slope of Ränggen Hill, within the municipality of Eptingen, below a steep rock face, and can be reached via a footpath. Trail conditions may vary. The privately owned ruins can only be viewed from the outside; check this access information before your visit.

Those looking for a route with a different course will find another option in the Diegter Valley Tour: it leads from Eptingen through the forest to Dietisberg. There are steep climbs and descents before and after Eptingen. Riedfluh and Bölcheflue, by contrast, are separate hiking destinations, each with its own starting points and access information.

Castle ruins and their history

Riedfluh, also known as Haselburg, is an unusual cave-castle ruin. Archaeological investigations date its construction to around 1050. The architectural decorative elements found there were otherwise common at the time mainly in royal palatine buildings, that is, castle-like palace complexes. A fire must have raged at Riedfluh around 1200; afterward, the site was abandoned and fell into ruin. Its wall remains were excavated archaeologically and conserved from 1981 to 1983.

Witwald Castle offers a connection to a different period: it was probably founded in the 13th century as the seat of the Lords of Eptingen. The visible wall remains of the castle ruins were renovated in 2018 to preserve them as a historically significant building and cultural landmark of the municipality. The recorded dates of the two sites therefore differ considerably: Riedfluh is dated to around 1050, while Witwald was probably founded in the 13th century.

Museum, church, and mineral spring

The August Suter Museum is devoted exclusively to the sculptor August Suter. His son Claude donated his father’s artistic estate to the municipality of Eptingen in 1975. Architect Max Schneider established the museum in Eptingen’s old mill; it opened in 1980. The museum can be reached from Sissach by bus number 107. It is about 150 meters from the Gemeindeplatz stop. Check the current timetable when planning your journey.

Eptingen’s church also offers a historical point of interest: it dates from 1357. The church tower and four bells were added in 1879. For a visit combining art and local history, these details can be considered alongside the history of the August Suter Museum.

Eptingen Mineral Spring is another part of the village’s history. The source of Eptinger mineral water and the bottling plant of Mineralquelle Eptingen AG are located in Eptingen; the company has been bottling mineral water since 1900. Visitors can tour the production facilities in Eptingen at the mineral spring. An aperitif can be booked after the tour if desired. Check the visitor and reservation details in advance.

When looking for a hotel in Eptingen, consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: local and art history, the castle ruins, or hiking destinations in the surrounding landscape.
