Church, rectory and architectural history

The Reformed Church of St. Peter stands prominently on a hill spur in front of the village entrance. The first church on this site was built in the 13th century on an early medieval burial ground. The church has stained-glass windows by the artist Walter Eglin. Its location and building history make it a distinctive historic landmark within the story of the village.

South of the church hill, the rectory lies between the stream and the slope. It was built in 1703/04 by the abbess, who held the right to collect tithes, and forms a group of buildings with the parish barn and a fountain. Diegten was first mentioned in a document in 1152 under the name “Dietingoven”. Archaeological finds indicate that the area was already inhabited in Roman times. Another historical trace is the settlement of Tüllikon, which existed in 1382 within what is now Diegten. These details represent different historical points of reference: the early written record of the place name, Roman-era finds and a documented settlement in the present-day municipal area.

Öpfelegge – Salathé’s farm shop sells dessert apples and seasonal fruit such as plums, Diegten apricots and peaches from its own farm.
