Zunzgen lies south of Sissach in the Diegtertal, on the banks of the Diegterbach, which flows into the Ergolz. The village has a rural character and an active community life. Specific themes can help guide your choice of stay: a distinctive hill with an archaeological history, historic buildings and activities that are partly tied to the seasons. This lets you get to know Zunzgen through both its local history and leisure ideas centred on the village and its surrounding landscape.

The Büchel: landmark and archaeological site

The Zunzger Büchel, also known as Heidenbüchel, is the village’s landmark and a hill around 30 metres high. The rounded mound was artificially raised at the southern exit of the village. An investigation uncovered parts of an early medieval castle complex in 1950. The hill was built in two phases and was probably inhabited from the 10th to the early 12th century. These details link the Büchel’s distinctive shape with its varied uses in earlier centuries.

The Büchel serves as a viewpoint and can be reached on foot from the west side. Check local conditions before your visit.

Historic buildings in the upper part of the village

The former tithe house at Hardstrasse 7/7a stands prominently on a rise in the upper part of Zunzgen. It may have been built as early as the 16th or 17th century. This is an estimate rather than an exact construction date. The tithe house adds another example of local architectural history to the story of the Büchel.

The granary in Zunzgen was used to store the tithe and dues paid by Zunzgen’s citizens. Alongside the age of historic buildings, this function offers insight into the former importance of dues in village life. The tithe house and granary represent different aspects of local history: one is a building with an estimated construction period, the other a granary with a recorded storage function.

Leisure activities throughout the seasons

In addition to its sunbathing lawn, Zunzgen outdoor swimming pool has a table tennis table. It combines a place to relax with a specific opportunity to get active. This offers another way to experience Zunzgen during your stay, distinct from visiting a historic site: here, the focus is on the swimming pool’s sunbathing lawn and table tennis table.

More than 40 Huacaya alpacas live at Hof Wüest on the Zunzgerberg; the number of animals may change. In summer, alpaca yoga is offered there for visitors. In winter, visitors can take part in a fondue gathering among the alpacas; a date is listed for January 2027. Summer and winter thus offer different experiences at the same farm. Since dates and availability may change, check the current offer before your trip.

Cycling routes through the Diegtertal

Cycling routes around Zunzgen pass through the Diegtertal and landscapes of plateaus, forests, meadows and orchards. Elevated areas offer wide-ranging views. The route description thus draws attention to the variety of landscapes around the village. Whether you plan your stay around historic sites or the landscape, the Büchel and the cycling routes offer two different ways to spend your time in Zunzgen.
