Wintersingen is a linear village along the Wintersingerbach, in a hollow formed by the stream north of the Kienberg. Within the municipality, viticulture, woodland and a farming-influenced settlement with distinctive historic buildings come together. You can tailor your stay to different interests: wine trails and their themes, the landscape or the village’s distinctive architectural history. The municipality is in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and belongs to the district of Sissach.

Landscape, vineyards and trails

Wintersingen has 7.6 hectares of vineyards within its cultivated landscape. The municipality also includes 244 hectares of forest. Elevations range from 370 metres at the municipal and cantonal boundary near Iglingerhof to 738 metres on the Chienberg. Widholde is a south-facing slope above Wintersingen, towards Rickenbach; the Räbhus Widholde is in the vineyard area and offers views of Wintersingen.

The 4 km Wintersingen Alpaca Trail is a scavenger-hunt trail along alpaca pastures, over country lanes and through the forest. The animals can be observed from behind the fence, but cannot be petted as part of the trail. Check the latest route details and conditions before setting out. Another route is the Syydebändel & Vine Trail: it leads from Maisprach over the southern slopes of the vineyards to Buus and continues around Staufen Hill to Wintersingen. Six information boards along the trail explain the viticulture of the Syydebändel winegrowers. The Baselbieter Vine Route starts in Wintersingen and passes the first vineyards.

The Wy-Erläbnis also brings wine and activity together: this annual wine hike takes place on the last Saturday in August, from Buus via Wintersingen to Maisprach. Local wines and delicious regional specialities are served along the way. If this date is important to your travel plans, check the date of the relevant year’s event. The Räbhus Widholde offers views of Wintersingen and is in the Widholde vineyard area. The 2025 programme lists Wintersingen wines, grilled dishes, Zvieriplättli and desserts; check dates and current offerings before visiting.

Villagescape and architectural history

Wintersingen’s villagescape is included in the Swiss Inventory of Protected Sites and is considered to be of national importance in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. The Reformed church is a striking example of the village’s architectural history. It follows the unusual Winkelhaken church plan, a Reformed spatial layout dating from the 17th century that occurs in Switzerland only in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. A south wing built in 1676 created the Winkelhaken floor plan that still exists today; almost all of the historic furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved.

The parsonage is another distinctive building: the three-storey structure dates from 1662 and has a tall pitched roof and a walled garden. The ensemble described also includes a lime tree over 200 years old, traditionally used for dancing. A covered bridge connects the former mill to a barn. Wintersingen is also a farming village that developed in the Alemannic settlement style, with residential and farm buildings grouped together and largely retaining their original character.
