Endingen offers points of interest for travellers who want to focus on cultural history and architecture and are also considering a hike. The Jewish Cultural Trail comprises 15 stops and features 21 information boards. The figures describe different components of the offering: the stops structure the trail, while the boards provide information. For planning, you can view the Cultural Trail as an overarching theme or focus on the synagogue, mikveh and Jewish cemetery individually. The Museum of Firefighting, Crafts and Agriculture broadens the thematic perspective to include firefighting, crafts and agricultural equipment from earlier times.

Jewish History and Architecture

Endingen Synagogue is a clearly structured Neoclassical plastered building with details influenced by Moorish forms. Its largely preserved architectural painting is also one of the building’s features. The synagogue has been protected as a cantonal monument since 1963. Its Neoclassical design, influenced details and painted decoration offer different ways to appreciate its architecture. Endingen Mikveh was built in 1867 as a ritual bath for the Jewish community; its immersion pool has been preserved to this day. It offers insights into the history of the Jewish ritual bath. It can be visited individually or as part of a group tour on the Jewish Cultural Trail; check current visiting arrangements in advance. Jewish residents lived in Endingen and Lengnau from the 17th century; elsewhere in Switzerland, they were denied the right to settle freely.

Cemetery and Hike

The Jewish cemetery between Endingen and Lengnau lies on a hill and is a woodland cemetery. Its tombstones date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The cemetery thus forms a distinct historical focus alongside the synagogue’s architecture and the ritual bath. The AG2020 hike passes the cemetery on the way to Endingen. The difference is clear when choosing between them: the Jewish Cultural Trail is characterised by its stops and information boards; AG2020 passes the cemetery on a hike. A public bus is available for the journey from Endingen and Lengnau to the Jewish cemetery. Check the connection before travelling, as public transport services can change.

Museums and Other Interests

The Museum of Firefighting, Crafts and Agriculture in Schöntal, Endingen, brings together three subject areas: firefighting, crafts and agricultural equipment from earlier times. The craft museum has historical equipment and tools from more than 60 trades. This figure emphasises a broad collection covering a variety of fields of work, rather than a single craft. The different trades thus have their own focus alongside the Jewish cultural sites, where the synagogue and mikveh connect architecture with religious history. Endingen swimming pool is an outdoor pool and therefore a different kind of local point of interest.
