Rheinfelden on the Upper Rhine combines wellness facilities with trails, river experiences and a historic old town. If you are looking for a hotel, the activities you have planned may influence your choice of destination: a visit to the baths, a walking route, a boat trip on the Rhine or time spent in the narrow streets. The variety of options helps you tailor your stay to your interests.

The Upper Rhine, Inseli and the Old Town

Rheinfelden lies on the Upper Rhine, about 15 kilometres east of Basel. The old town is on the left bank of the Rhine. There, the approximately 150-metre-long Inseli divides the river into two branches. Stadtpark West borders directly on the old town: imposing trees and a spacious promenade define the park, making it ideal for walks.

Wellness at sole uno and the Solebad Eden

The «sole uno» wellness world features a 36 °C pool with a 12 per cent salt content and Rheinfelder Natursole®. It also offers saunas in the Finnish and Russian traditions, as well as the SalzReich area. A fire and ice bath, tropical rain, Alpine waterfalls and aromatic steam add further highlights. At Solebad Eden & Spa Eden, you can enjoy indoor and outdoor pools. The facility borders a quiet little park and also has a sauna, a steam bath with various infusions and a fitness room. The two baths therefore differ in the pools and facilities described. Check the current operating and access conditions before your visit: individual installations at sole uno may be temporarily unavailable; services and access at Solebad Eden may also change.

The Salt Trail and the Fricktaler Höhenweg

The 3.2-kilometre Rheinfelden Salt Trail runs from the Riburg saltworks to Rheinfelden’s Stadtpark. Along the way, ten information pillars tell the story of salt—from the primordial sea through antiquity and the Middle Ages to the present day. The stated distance provides a concrete reference point when planning a shorter route; check the route details before setting out.

The nearly 60-kilometre Fricktaler Höhenweg offers a longer route and can be explored in three to five stages. Its first stage starts in Rheinfelden and covers just under 10 kilometres, crossing the wooded Steppberg and the long ridge of Magdener Galgen to Sonnenberg and on to Zeiningen. The total distance and number of stages offer two different formats for planning your trip. Walking conditions and trail signage may vary by season; check the latest route information before setting out.

Boat trips and travel from Basel

The boat trip from Basel to Rheinfelden takes about 2.5 hours. Along the way, it passes through the Birsfelden and Augst locks, with views of both the Swiss and German sides of the Rhine. In Rheinfelden, it is just a short walk from the landing stage to the historic old town. Boat services operate seasonally, and landing options may also vary by season. Check the latest dates and departure times before making plans.

For overland travel, the city lists a direct motorway connection and good public transport links; many express trains stop in Rheinfelden. Basel is 15 minutes away by train or car. The travel times for the boat trip and overland journey between Basel and Rheinfelden are therefore quite different. Check the current timetable when planning your specific journey.

Old town stories and regional culture

The Fricktaler Museum is located in Haus zur Sonne on Marktgasse. Its regional exhibits range from archaeology and finds from archaeological digs to medieval crafts, work in the tobacco factory and cigars. Access and the exhibition layout may change as part of the renovation. Check the current situation before visiting.

Guided tours of the historic old town share stories about its buildings, narrow streets and notable figures. The night watchman tour offers a different perspective: it leads through the dark streets of the old town and frames the walk as a journey back to the Middle Ages. Check the latest dates on the official booking page before adding this activity to your plans.

The brewing world, gardens and cherry blossoms

At the Feldschlösschen Brauwelt Rheinfelden, tours and a visitor centre explain how beer is brewed. During a one-day course, participants first tour the brewery and then brew their own beer. Since course availability should be checked, it is advisable to confirm before booking.

The historic Castelen estate features an architectural garden and a landscape garden, as well as picturesque views of the Rhine plain and Augusta Raurica. For a seasonal outing, the Fricktaler Chriesiweg is recommended for a colourful spring visit when the cherry trees are in bloom. These garden and trail experiences add two more themes to your trip planning alongside the town and wellness options.
