Vänersborg by Lake Vänern: Trails, Art and Culture
Accommodation in Vänersborg
Vänersborg offers a range of options for your stay: trails and waterside scenery, cycling and hiking routes, as well as art and culture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Vänersborg, first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. You can then assess the destinations and routes based on what you’d like to do.
Nature trails and the Lake Vänern shoreline
Vänersborg has ten Swedish miles—that is, about 100 kilometres—of shoreline along Lake Vänern. The nature areas also each offer a different focus. In the Dalbobergen Nature Reserve, easy-to-walk trails offer beautiful views over Vänersborgsviken. In Nygårdsängen, paths run through reeds and meadows and along the water; the area is rich in birdlife. The circular trail there is about 1.2 kilometres long. When comparing the two nature areas, Dalbobergen stands out for its views over the bay, while Nygårdsängen offers paths through a landscape of reeds and meadows, as well as birdwatching. The approximate length of the circular trail also gives you a specific distance to help with your planning.
Walking and cycling routes
For a longer walk, the Pilgrimsleden Göta Älv runs from Trollhättan along the Göta älv, past the Överby shopping centre and the excavated Karls grav canal. After the lock, the route follows the northern canal bank to the centre of Vänersborg. Check the trail conditions before setting off. Beyond Vänersborg, the Pilgrimsleden Dalsland continues: 100 kilometres in total, along Lake Vänern towards Sikhall and then inland via Mellerud and Håverud to Edsleskog. The routes therefore differ in their described direction: one leads to the centre of Vänersborg, while the other continues through the places named in Dalsland.
Vänersborg is also a useful waypoint for a cycling trip: the city lies on the Vänerleden. The Vänersborg–Åmål and Vänersborg–Mariestad stages start or end there. If you’re planning a walk within the centre, you can start Vänerstad anywhere. The recommended starting points are the travel centre or the tourist office in Vänersborg. So you can choose your starting point flexibly or use either of these two suggested locations.
Museums and public art
Vänersborgs museum is Sweden’s oldest museum setting. Vänersborgs konsthall offers guided tours of Vänersborg’s public art for large and small groups of all ages. Art in the urban landscape and in the sculpture park each has its own setting: as part of ARTSCAPE Vänersborg, nine large-scale artworks were created on selected building façades in the city. Skulpturparken Restad Gård features works by internationally acclaimed artists. The art on offer therefore ranges from selected façades in the city to a sculpture park, while the museum adds another cultural stop.
Experiences and practical information
Vattenpalatset is a water park for all ages. Its listed facilities include waterslides, a water pistol, a lazy river and a cave. It’s a two-minute walk from Vänersborg railway station. Skräckleparken has several swimming spots and a nine-hole disc golf course; the park is right on Lake Vänern. If you’d like to combine different activities in the park, you’ll find both swimming spots and the disc golf course there.
Groups may also be interested in the renovated Gröna salen at Vänersborgs bibliotek: the room can be rented and seats 105 people, or a maximum of 150 people at one time. As rental terms may change, check the conditions before making an enquiry. This information may help when planning a group event.
