Knätte: Church, Nature and Änglaleden
Accommodation in Knätte
Things to do during a stay in Knätte range from medieval church and religious history to protected landscapes and walking or cycling tours. Knätte Church is a medieval stone church; Knätte Chapel has its own history as a place of religious gatherings. Änglaleden adds to these highlights as a 37-kilometre cycling and hiking trail. If you’re looking for a hotel in Knätte, you can plan your stay around local history, nature or a tour.
Knätte Church and Cemetery
Knätte Church is generally dated to a period from the late 12th century to the beginning of the 14th century. It stands on a distinctive hill above a compact village in the built-up valley of the Ätran River. The medieval stone church thus combines an approximate date with a prominent position in the valley.
The cemetery has two entrances. A stone staircase leads up from the country road to the north-west entrance. There are stone gateposts and an early 20th-century wrought-iron double gate. The cemetery therefore brings together features from different periods: the medieval church and the much later gate.
Knätte Chapel: History and Condition
Knätte Chapel adds another religious site to the local history. Aron Frisell built the chapel and made it available to all who preached the Gospel of Christ. The Baptist congregation in Knätte held its gatherings in the chapel. Its dedication and use as a meeting place tell two sides of its story. The building still stands, but has been empty and unused for many years and has now fallen into serious disrepair.
Landscape and Nature Conservation
Knätte Nature Reserve comprises two distinctive hills formed by glacial meltwater deposits. Some of the material originates from the limestone rocks of Falbygden. The hills give the area a distinct landform; their origins and the source of some of the material add a geological perspective to the landscape.
A road branching off just south of Knätte Church leads to Knätte Nature Reserve. There you’ll find an information board, a car park and a rest area. Knätte kullar is a four-hectare nature reserve with a steppe-like dry meadow.
Änglaleden on Foot or by Bike
Änglaleden is a 37-kilometre cycling and hiking trail between Årås, Hössna, Knätte and Liared. It passes through varied landscapes along Lakes Jogen, Vållern and Lönnern. This gives you different points of reference when planning your tour: the route’s length as a measure and the lakes as specific landscape features. You can also choose how to classify the trail based on your preferred way of getting around.
Along Änglaleden, the wider surrounding region has both wind shelters and overnight accommodation. This information refers to the route and its regional surroundings. Route details may change, so check them before setting out.
