Upphärad offers travellers several distinct points of interest: architectural history and church art, places of remembrance, firefighting history and outdoor activities. The surrounding area also has two nature reserves with different landscape features. Depending on your interests, you can make cultural sites, outdoor activities or an excursion into nature the focus of your plans.

Church, Art and Places of Remembrance

Construction of the stone Upphärad Church on Nyckleby land, beside the country road, began on 5 May 1724. The pulpit and altarpiece were made by the sculptor Mäster Johan Scheffer. The church thus brings together architectural history and two specific works of sculpture.

There are nine designated cultural graves in the churchyard. Information signs and QR codes let visitors listen to the stories behind them. Project information was updated in November 2021, so check local visitor arrangements in advance.

Backstugan Kulla and Firefighting History

Backstugan Kulla is a well-preserved example of an early 20th-century backstuga setting. Its dating is explicitly considered an estimate, alongside its classification as an example of this type of setting.

The Höljebacka Fire Museum presents the history of old firefighting in an authentic setting. The vehicle hall displays fire engines, equipment and a working fire pole. Its collection focus differs from that of the church sites: here, fire engines and equipment define the subject, while the church sites centre on architectural history, the pulpit and the altarpiece. The museum is in Höljebacka, Karlsro, Upphärad. If you are planning a visit, check local visitor arrangements in advance.

Activities in Upphärad and Road Cycling

An outdoor gym with several stations for full-body strength training is located right next to the playground at Vadet in Upphärad. Unlike the historic sites, this is all about outdoor physical activity. Operating details may change; check them before your visit.

The area also has routes for road cycling: attractive stretches connect Trollhättan, Sjuntorp, Upphärad and Velanda. The gym is a local training spot, while the road-cycling stretches link several places. The two activities can therefore be distinguished by their respective geographical settings.

Nature Reserves in the Surrounding Area

Lilla Boda Nature Reserve lies about 2 kilometres southeast of Upphärad and is accessible via Road 2011. Häggsjöryr offers a different landscape: the nature reserve is near Lake Häggsjön, about 4.6 kilometres from Upphärad Church. Sheep graze among the oak-covered mounds in the old oak pasture landscape.

For Lilla Boda, the direction, approximate distance and Road 2011 provide concrete points of reference; at Häggsjöryr, oak pasture and Lake Häggsjön shape the landscape. If you are choosing between the nature destinations, these are different features to consider when making your selection.
