Three themes make it easy to plan a stay in Trollhättan: hands-on activities, industrial and canal history, and paths and viewpoints along the Göta älv. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which of these interests you want to shape your stay. The following places and routes offer specific points of reference.

Technology and industrial history

The Innovatum Science Center offers 4,200 m² of interactive stations, creative play areas and experiments. There are also activities for the whole family, with opportunities to get involved, play, try new things, and discover information and history. The experience combines hands-on activities with insights into historical topics.

The story told at the Saab Car Museum spans from the first prototypes to the last car to roll off the production line. Alongside its collections, the museum offers opportunities to meet experienced Saab veterans. A visit therefore focuses on both the development of the cars and the collection, as well as personal encounters.

NOHAB:s Smedja preserves another facet of industrial history: its historic setting, with hammers, furnaces and tools, remains intact. The Trollhättan canal and lock area is also designated as one of Sweden’s twelve most important industrial heritage sites. The Kanalmuseet presents the history of the Trollhätte Canal and its lock system. The city thus offers different ways to encounter its industrial past—from automotive history and a preserved smithy to the development of the canal.

Locks, canal and city views

The Trollhättefallen waterfalls are located on the Göta älv in Trollhättan. Historically, they blocked shipping between Vänern and Västerhavet. In the lock area, three generations of lock systems lie amid the natural surroundings of Gamle Dal. One way to explore the sites together is the Nils Ericsons promenad: it takes 25 minutes and passes all three generations, the lock keeper’s houses, the Old Canal Office and a memorial stone to Nils Ericson.

Trollhätte Kanalpark connects seven special places along the Trollhätte Canal. The Kopparklinten viewpoint offers views across much of the canal park and the city. It is about 77 metres above sea level. The view and the historic sites offer different perspectives: Kopparklinten looks out over the city and canal park, while the promenade takes in individual landmarks in the history of the locks.

Paths along the Göta älv

The Älvrummet nature reserve frames the Göta älv as a valley. There are walking trails there that can lead from the Trollhättefallen to the lock area. Slussvarvet is a 6 km route along the canal that returns to the starting point via Kärlekens stig in Älvrummet. By contrast, the Nils Ericsons promenad is described as taking 25 minutes and passes historic buildings and sites. The descriptions therefore offer different ways to plan: one gives a route length, the other a duration.

Edsvidsleden also runs through varied natural landscapes and nature reserves, as well as along the Göta älv. The route description mentions beautiful views and pleasant places to stop for a coffee. This route complements the specific information about the paths by the locks with nature experiences and places to take a break. When planning, you can therefore decide whether to focus on the lock sites or also set aside time for walks through nature and protected areas.
