Heestrand – Coastal Village with a Stoneworking History
Accommodation in Heestrand
When looking for a hotel in Heestrand, it is worth exploring the history of this coastal village: the stone industry and maritime development have shaped its character. The village brings together memories of a former fishing settlement, traces of stone extraction and opportunities for walks by the sea. When planning your stay, you can decide whether cultural history, coastal trails or both are the main draw for you.
From Shoreline Landing to Coastal Village of the Stone Industry
Heestrand was originally the shoreline landing of the Hee farmstead and later developed into a small fishing village. Today, Heestrand is a well-preserved coastal village whose development was shaped primarily by the stone industry and maritime history. Large-scale stone extraction began in 1887 and took place mainly in the quarries at Sibirien, Källvik and on Ulön/Dannemark. Operations at the Sibirien quarry were extensive from 1887 until the outbreak of the Second World War. At that time, export and transport routes were disrupted. The maritime development and the history of stone extraction can thus be seen as two defining strands of the village’s history.
Quarry Landscape and Stoneworking
Sibirien is a quarry dating from the stoneworking industry era and a vast rocky landscape with clear traces of stone extraction. Stenstugan Heestrand offers another perspective on the material: the stonemason Hans Niklasson built it entirely from dressed granite between 1914 and 1922. Carved figures and images decorate both its exterior wall and the surrounding stone wall. In Heestrand, large-scale traces of quarrying sit alongside crafted details in granite. The village’s history can therefore be explored both through the quarry landscape and through the working of the material in a building.
Seaside Walking Trails and Seasonal Culture
The Utsikten walking trail in Heestrand climbs up onto the cliffs and descends to the shore. Numerous seaside walking trails also bear historical traces from the heyday of the stoneworking industry. If you organise your outings by theme, both the coastal landscape and the area’s former stoneworking are represented as interests. The association’s programme for 2024 to 2026 describes the Heestrand Hembygdsgård primarily as a museum and meeting place during the summer months. If you include this place in your travel plans, bear in mind its seasonal focus; it is advisable to enquire in advance about specific visiting opportunities.
Further Planning Information
The Ulön-Dannemark nature reserve is outside Heestrand and can only be reached by boat. For planning purposes, it is therefore a different destination from the walking trails in the village. A decision by the Technical Committee dated 15 December 2025 provided for Heestrand’s bathing area to be taken into municipal ownership.
