Hamburgsund: Strait, swimming spots and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Hamburgsund
Hamburgsund brings together a distinctive strait, swimming spots, hiking trails and historic buildings, appealing to visitors with different interests. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the coastal landscape, a ferry crossing, a day at a swimming spot, or local and architectural history.
Landscape and history around the strait
A sea-filled rift valley separates the mainland from Hamburgö. Hamburgsund lies in a landscape of bare rocks, swimming coves and green spaces ideal for hiking. Much of the older housing and boathouses around the strait have been preserved. Hamburgsund is mentioned as a customs station as early as 1585. During the herring season in the 18th century, several rendering works operated along the sheltered strait between Hamburgö and the mainland. The landscape can therefore also be viewed in the context of its earlier uses.
Hamburgsund Church is a wooden church inaugurated in 1915. Its nave has a tower to the southwest and a five-sided chancel to the northeast. This layout gives the church a clear architectural structure and offers a specific point of interest for anyone interested in architectural styles.
Ferry, hiking trails and paddling
The Hamburgsundsleden ferry runs between Hamburgsund and Hamburgö in northern Bohuslän. The ferry route is 130 metres long, and the crossing takes three minutes. Check current service information before travelling.
The Bergaleden hiking trail follows paths and old tracks around Hagberget and offers views of the strait between Hamburgö and the mainland. If you want to take in views of the water while hiking, this trail is a specific option. An older municipal nature guide also lists a hiking route on Hamburgö from the ferry landing via Vänd igen and the so-called Elefantstigen to Sandvik; check the route before setting out.
An older municipal nature guide also describes the gravel-surfaced Elefantstigen as accessible to wheelchair users. Check conditions before your visit. There is also an option on the water: a day trip starting in Hamburgsund follows a paddling route through the strait between Hamburgsund and Hamburgö.
Swimming spots and cultural attractions
Norra Ejde Pluret is a municipal swimming spot in Hamburgsund with sand, a bathing jetty, a car park and a toilet; it is suitable for children. Boviken on Hamburgö is also a municipal swimming spot, with sand, a bathing jetty, a diving tower and a toilet; this spot is also suitable for children. Both swimming spots have sand, a bathing jetty and a toilet. Norra Ejde Pluret also has a car park, while Boviken has a diving tower. This makes it possible to compare the two spots based on their different additional features.
Scen på Bônn is an open-air stage in an old quarry, hosting music, entertainment and theatre. Since spring 2010, the Scen på Bônn association has been responsible for the venue and has aimed to offer events and activities there throughout the year, with a focus on the summer season. In recent years, the programme has also included children’s theatre weeks; check event dates if you are interested. The play ship Nolhôtten at Hjalmars Kaj commemorates the skipper Stellan Johansson and his Nolhôtten.
The regional area also includes Hornbore Ting: a Viking play with an associated market is held every summer at the Hornborga castle ruins. If this seasonal event fits your travel plans, check the dates.
