Stillingsön lies on the eastern side of Orust and is one of Bohuslän’s smaller seaside resorts. The resort was established in 1865 and was the first independent tourism initiative on Orust. A well-preserved example of the 19th-century seaside resorts on Sweden’s west coast, Stillingsön combines an early tourism history with a clear regional identity. If you also consider a destination’s history when choosing where to travel, Stillingsön offers a focus that ranges from older local records to the development of the seaside resort.

A Local History Spanning Several Periods

The local history goes back considerably further than the tourism era. Stillingsön was originally common land belonging to the Kåröd estate. Bishop Jens Nilsson’s visitation books from 1574 to 1597 record this connection; in 1688, Stillingsön is mentioned as a croft site. Both dates predate the founding of the seaside resort and add an older layer to its history. This distinction is useful for understanding the place: its history did not begin with the seaside resort; its tourism development was a later phase.

One year after the seaside resort was established, the steamer “Uddevalla” began calling at Stillingsön four times a week in 1866 on its route between Gothenburg and Uddevalla. The stop followed immediately after the resort’s founding; transport history and early tourism development are closely connected here.

Buildings and Seaside Resort Life

The Sjöhult boarding house in Stillingsön was built in 1868. Its construction took place two years after the steamer “Uddevalla” began calling in 1866. The former vicarage of Myckleby has a different building history: it was rebuilt on the shore of Stillingsön and named Sjövik. While Sjöhult is associated with a boarding house, Sjövik carries on the story of a former vicarage on Stillingsön’s shore.

The historic bathing life included a bathing house, later referred to as a warm bathing house, as well as a bathing pool. The later name adds another stage to the bathing house’s history. Unlike Sjöhult and Sjövik, the bathing house and pool refer directly to the bathing facilities. The building history and bathing life can therefore be viewed as two distinct aspects of the local history.

Landscape and Context

The historic surroundings of the seaside resort were characterized by lushly vegetated areas and calmer waters. These landscape features complement the building and transport history with the setting in which the resort is described. Stillingsön is also classified among the smaller cold-water bathing resorts on Sweden’s west coast. The place is especially interesting for your travel plans if you are interested in early seaside resorts, local building history, and historic steamer traffic. If you want to explore its connection to cold-water bathing resorts during your visit, check current access arrangements in advance.
