Discover Kalvsund
Accommodation in Kalvsund
Kalvsund combines a car-free island setting with maritime history and outdoor activities. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether historic sites, a walking trail, or swimming spots are most important for your stay.
Getting there and the island’s character
Kalvsund is separated from Björkö by a narrow sound and is car-free. Västtrafik ferry line 296 connects Öckerö, Framnäs on Björkö, Kalvsund, and Grötö. Check the current timetable before departure. If travelling by passenger ferry, you can park at the ferry terminal on Björkö or Öckerö and take the ferry from there. Take the ferry journey into account when planning your stay.
Maritime history and cultural heritage
Kalvsund’s role as a harbour dates back at least to the Middle Ages. The island was once a centre for the herring trade as well as a customs and pilot station. In 1309, a clash took place near Kalvsund between Duke Erik Magnusson and King Haakon V of Norway. The island’s history thus includes both long-standing harbour functions and a specific historical event.
The sea marker Valen stands at Kalvsund’s highest point. Beneath Valen, a compass rose dating from 1684 is carved into the rock; it is protected as a fixed archaeological monument. The named site, the visible mark in the rock, and its protected status give the island’s cultural heritage a tangible presence.
Another historic building is the Bremerska villa. It was built in 1912 for the herring merchant Börjesson and was designated a listed building on 2 August 2004. Over the course of its history, it has housed, among other things, a bank and a boarding house. The ground floor contains an exhibition about the smuggling king Bremer. It is open during the summer season and on certain occasions by appointment. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
Walking trail, swimming spots, and exercise
There is a 1.2-kilometre walking trail on Kalvsund. The specific distance can help you plan a walk. For swimming, Körrgårns badplats has a swimming jetty, diving tower, and dry toilet. Bindes is a smaller swimming spot in the southwest of the island. The descriptions of the locations differ: facilities are listed for Körrgårns, while Bindes is described by its location and relative size. Check the current condition of the facilities before visiting, and bear seasonal conditions in mind at Bindes.
A newly built outdoor fitness course is located next to the Såsen association hall at Gamla vägen 19. The walking trail, swimming spots, and fitness course offer different ways to spend time outdoors. Together with the historic sites, they give you a choice of cultural and physical activities when planning your visit, though these places should not be taken as a single route.
