Källö-Knippla: The Slingan Trail, bathing area and village character
Accommodation in Källö-Knippla
Källö-Knippla offers different ways to enjoy a stay: the “Slingan” trail runs along the sea and across rocky terrain, while the bathing area and harbour provide other places to spend time outdoors. The dense Bohuslän architecture and the island’s fishing heritage add to its character. When planning your trip, consider whether you want to focus on walks, swimming, local history or a mix of these.
Exploring on foot: Slingan and Wideringen
The 1.5-kilometre “Slingan” trail on Knippla runs along the sea, through vegetation and across rocky terrain. It is part of the Göteborgs skärgårdsled, which in turn forms part of the longer Kuststigen trail. There are benches and tables along the route, as well as a large barbecue area. Its length and varied landscape make the trail a useful point of reference when planning walks during your stay.
“Slingan” is adapted for accessibility, but has some steeper sections. Take both features into account when assessing the route. Another place to take in the view on Knippla is Wideringen: the viewpoint is at the island’s highest point and offers a 360-degree panorama of islands, sea and horizon.
Bathing area, sports and time at the harbour
On the eastern side of Källö-Knippla is Tranbärsvikens badplats, with a diving tower, floating jetties and a toilet. Municipal bathing facilities can change, so it is a good idea to check the latest information before your visit. An outdoor padel court on Tranbärsvägen and an outdoor gym next to the football pitch and beach offer more ways to stay active. A municipal overview compiled in 2024 lists both facilities; check current access and booking options in advance.
There is a boules court for everyone at the café in Knippla harbour, except when KIK is holding matches or league competitions there. A mini-golf course is located beside an outdoor terrace and opens seasonally. Knippla also has a sauna, where you can enjoy the evening sun and cool off with a swim in the sea.
Village character and history
The preserved, authentic Bohuslän architecture defines Källö-Knippla, with houses standing close together. In the 1960s, 29 fishing boats were moored in the harbour, each with a crew of six to eight fishermen. According to the island’s recorded history, the first residents were fishermen who benefited from the great herring period of the 1790s. The village character brings together a long fishing history and a densely built settlement.
The site of Knippla kapell was used by the temperance association Verdandi at the beginning of the 20th century. Church coffee is usually served there after services. A traditional midsummer celebration for children and adults is also held on Källö-Knippla. These customs and historical connections add other themes to a stay beyond trails, bathing and sports.
Getting there and moorings
