Bro appeals to a range of travel interests: Bro Church offers a glimpse into medieval and early modern history, the cultural trails in Brodalen pass historical and scenic points of interest, and the Broälven adds an ecological theme. Climbing opportunities in Brodalen are another possible highlight. The trails vary considerably in length, difficulty rating and content.

Three Cultural Trails with Distinct Highlights

The Södra stigen cultural trail is a 0.5-kilometre circular route in Brodalen. It passes Tingshögen and three Iron Age burial mounds. The shortest of the three routes described here, it offers a compact trail with clearly identified prehistoric points of interest.

The Norra stigen cultural trail is 2.2 kilometres long, rated moderate and leads to Störreberg. Along the trail are Bronze Age rock carvings featuring horses. The style of these horse depictions is considered unique to Störreberg. The Norra stigen also passes Rydstrandsgården. Here, the route brings together rock art and another named site.

The Ă–stra stigen cultural trail is 3.5 kilometres long and is also rated moderate. Its points of interest include the ruins of a 12th-century fortress and the remains of a 13th-century house. The trail also passes the natural rock formation Bropelaren and a railway water crane dating from the steam locomotive era. This route brings together medieval traces, a natural formation and a feature of railway history.

For a direct comparison: Norra and Östra are both rated moderate; Östra is 1.3 kilometres longer. At 0.5 kilometres, Södra is the shorter circular route. The route lengths and stated difficulty ratings give you concrete points of reference when choosing. Route details can change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.

Bro Church and Its Dated Building History

Bro Church stands in a central location in Brodalen, about 100 metres west of the Broälven. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages. An examination of the church in 1938 revealed the foundations of a smaller Romanesque church. This finding adds an earlier building phase to its medieval history.

In 1709, the roofs of the choir and nave were decorated with polychrome paintings by Christian von Schönfeldt. Another date is associated with Bro gamla prästgård, which was built in 1705. The dates are just four years apart, but refer to different things: the construction of the parsonage and the decoration of the church roofs.

River Landscape and Climbing in Brodalen

The Broälven flows south towards Brofjorden and can be reached from Brodalen. Important spawning and breeding grounds for sea trout are located in its upper reaches. The river landscape thus complements the trails’ historical themes with a look at the ecological importance of the waterway.

Climbing is another possible highlight in Brodalen, in northern Lysekil, which has climbing opportunities of high international quality. Since 2017, an indoor facility has added to what is on offer. Bro Boulder has around 200 m² of bouldering walls with different angles. The information distinguishes between the general climbing opportunities and the specifically described bouldering area.

A 2025 project to provide an accessibility-adapted picnic table was also part of the improvements to the cultural trails in Brodalen. If you would like to include this table in your plans, check its current availability in advance. This makes it easier to weigh up your interests in trails, history, the river landscape and climbing.
