Björstorp on Lake Viken
Accommodation in Björstorp
Björstorp between forest and Viken
Björstorp lies on the shore of Lake Viken. The area consists mostly of natural land; birches and pines shape the forest, which is maintained to prevent it from becoming overgrown. The part of Viken within the area has a mostly stony bed. The forest and lakeshore thus give the place distinct landscape features.
Regionally, Viken is also part of a larger water system: it receives water from Lakes Örlen to the south and Unden to the north. It drains into Lake Vättern via the Forsviksån and is Vättern’s largest tributary. The water level of Viken as a whole is about 91.5 metres above sea level. It is regulated by diverting water through the Göta Canal and the Forsvik lock into Bottensjön and Vättern.
Björstorp lies in an area designated as being of national interest for nature conservation, tourism and outdoor recreation under Chapters 3 and 4 of the Swedish Environmental Code. This designation is based on Lake Viken and its shore areas.
Swimming spots, lakeside path and fishing
Björstorp has two swimming spots on Viken; conditions may vary seasonally. There are also two small harbours on the lake. A lakeside path leads from Björstorp in the direction of Markaviken. The shore therefore offers a range of features: swimming spots, small harbours and a path that heads towards Markaviken. If needed, check conditions at the swimming spots before your visit.
Fishing with a handline and trolling from a boat are permitted on Viken. This fishing permission applies to the lake. A separate destination nearby is the municipal Viken–Skarven swimming area in Undenäs. It is shallow, child-friendly and equipped with a bathing jetty.
If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Björstorp, deciding what interests you most can help: should your stay focus more on the lake and lakeside paths, or on the history of the place? This can help you decide the focus of your trip without treating the different places along Viken as if they were the same.
Getting there and finding your way
The access road to Björstorp is about 4.5 metres wide and has a gravel surface. The area has three gated entrances: two in Björstorp and one in Markaviken. Traffic in the area is light, although traffic levels may vary seasonally. The roads in the area encourage low speeds. As road conditions can change, check them before travelling if they are important to your plans.
The approximate width and gravel surface describe the access road; the three gates also provide a specific indication of how the entrances are distributed between Björstorp and Markaviken.
A glimpse into Björstorp’s history
Björstorp was first recorded in 1498 in the land register of Jöns Ulfsson Roos. Later, the place was incorporated into the Sannum estate complex and remained associated with its owners. Claes Fleming was among the owners of Björstorp in the 1640s and 1650s. These milestones offer different insights into the ownership history of the place.
A move from Skallebo is recorded for 1660: the Finnish settlers Carl Hindrichsson and Karin Mickelsdotter moved to Björstorp with their son and daughter-in-law. Together with the first entry in 1498, this settlement history places the area within several historical periods. Visitors who want to shape their trip around not only the lake but also the local history will find a distinct focus here alongside the natural and water-related features.
