Herrljunga: Trails, Culture and History
Accommodation in Herrljunga
The Nossan River and the trails between Haraberget and Orraholmen offer a tangible introduction to Herrljunga. The Nossan promenade, about 1.8 kilometres long, runs between these two places. Haraberget is a small hill in the town of Herrljunga, near the Nossan; Orraholmen lies just outside the built-up area. Along these short routes, different aspects of the landscape and the town come together.
Trails, water and outdoor activities
If you’re looking for a loop walk, there are different lengths and starting points to choose from: Blåa spåret is a loop of about 2.4 kilometres that starts in the Orraholmen recreation area. Gula spåret is about four kilometres long and is also a loop; it connects to Skoghälla. Herrljunga Stadspromenad is a loop of about 3.5 kilometres that passes 38 cultural sites or points of interest. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in character: some focus on loop walks, while others combine a stroll with insights into cultural history.
The municipality of Herrljunga has almost 130 kilometres of walking and exercise trails in total. Lengths range from the shortest route, at 1.3 kilometres, to the longest, at 21 kilometres. There is also a pilgrimage trail that measures 47.5 kilometres in total. For cycling in Herrljungabygden, routes of around 11 to 70 kilometres are available; they follow paved roads and gravel tracks. The stated route lengths and surfaces can help you match your planned outing to your preferences.
You can also explore the Nossan from the water: the river is navigable by canoe or kayak, but is considered challenging because there are many places where you need to carry your boat around obstacles. Thirty different fish species have been recorded in the Nossan. At the lake in Orraholmen, a rest area with benches, a wind shelter and a barbecue area invites you to linger. If you visit Haraberget, a paved, accessible path leads down to the pond from Grindarna, at its southern entrance. Coffee tables are set up there in summer. The Molla beech forest in the municipality also has marked trails, boardwalks and a rest area; the history of its oldest part dates back to the 17th century.
Cultural heritage and history
Herrljunga’s Kulturhus is home to an art gallery, an auditorium, the Fåglavik Glassworks Museum and a tourist information office. The Stadspromenad links several cultural sites along a loop; by comparison, the Hembygdspark offers a larger collection of sites: it includes around 20 buildings and is one of the larger open-air museums in the county.
There are also notable historic sites beyond these stops. Jällby Church is one of the few surviving wooden churches in Västergötland. At Gäsene Tingshus, you can see a well-preserved courtroom dating from 1776. Skogsbo-Hallkista is dated to 4,000 years ago. Odins flisor consists of three upright stones standing on the same rise. Nycklabacken Iron Age burial ground contains nearly 200 archaeological remains. Herrljunga’s old church was probably built in the 13th century; its historic site lies by the Nossan, north of Haraberget.
Part of Fåglavik’s railway station landscape has also been preserved: it includes the station building, outbuildings, a root cellar and a garden. The station is the only surviving example of an early station type designed by SJ’s architectural office. Fåglavik is also the birthplace of Elisabeth Hesselblad, who was born there on 4 June 1870.
Local events and flavours
Recurring events include Knallemarknad Herrljunga, a long-running market held on the second Tuesday of every month. At Rekoring Herrljunga, you can buy products directly from producers once a month; the collection usually takes place on the last Wednesday of the month at Röda torget. For both events, it’s worth checking the relevant dates when planning your trip.
Events offer a range of different experiences, too: the Kullingstrofén rally cup event is held annually in the municipality. The international trampoline competition Frivolten Cup takes place in Herrljunga in May. Konst och hantverksrundan is usually held on 1 September; it includes, among other things, a group exhibition at Herrljunga konsthall in the Kulturhus. If you’re planning your stay around an event, check its date before travelling.
For a taste of local produce, visit the farm shop at Herrljunga Drycker, which sells the producer’s full range of non-alcoholic drinks. It also offers rusks, crispbread, fudge, chocolate and snacks from other local businesses. At the Gäsene Mejeri shop in the municipality, you can sample cheese, learn more about the dairy’s cheeses and buy milk. Along with the trails, cultural sites and recurring events, these options make it easy to tailor your trip to your interests.
