Rådanefors: Ironworks History and Lake Landscape
Accommodation in Rådanefors
Rådanefors brings together the history of the Rådanefors bruk ironworks and a landscape shaped by lakes. Notable points of interest include preserved industrial ruins, the former manor house, the Flottarleden and the protected Dalslandseken oak. During your stay, you can group destinations by different interests: industrial history, waterways and landscape features each offer their own points of connection.
The Ironworks and Its Traces
Jöns Kock founded the Rådanefors bruk ironworks at a waterfall between Långhalmen and Rådanesjön. Before it closed in 1895, the operation included Lancashire forging and a foundry. The ironworks also produced railway carriages and horseshoe nails. The year 1895 marks the end of operations, so it refers to a different date from that of the surviving manor house.
The ruins of the ironworks founded by Kock remain in Rådanefors. A ruin of the works is recorded in the narrow strait between Rådanesjön and Långhalmen; it is also shown on an 1805 map. The former Rådanefors herrgård manor house dates from around 1800 and has also been preserved. By contrast, none of the former industrial buildings remain. The manor house and the industrial ruins are therefore distinct architectural points of reference in the history of the area: the manor house dates from around 1800, while ironworks production ended in 1895.
Lakes, Forest and Protected Nature
Numerous lakes shape the landscape around Rådanefors. Open farmland partly surrounds them and contributes to the scenery. A deciduous woodland area is another local feature: to the south, it stretches along the stream between Rådanesjön and Långhalmen; to the north, it lies along the shore of Rådanesjön. This makes it possible to distinguish water, open land and woodland by their specific locations, rather than describing the area only as a general lake landscape.
The lake in the narrow strait between Rådanesjön and Långhalmen once had a different outlet. This historical change adds to the geographical context of the ironworks, whose founding was also linked to a waterfall between the two lakes. The waterways are thus both part of the landscape described and a point of reference for the history of Rådanefors.
The ancient Dalslandseken oak stands near the public road between Rådanefors and Stigen. It is protected as a natural monument; the protection order dates from 1929. For a different perspective on the surroundings, Rådanefors lies between the two large recreation areas of Ödeborgsfjället and Kroppefjäll. The area is also of local and regional interest for outdoor recreation.
Flottarleden and Nearby Destinations
The Flottarleden runs from Rådanesjön through Gruksviken and onward to Rådanefors. The village is also the route’s eastern endpoint. Sjöbotten Nature Reserve, by contrast, is reached via an access road: a gravel access road lies about 1 km north of Rådanefors; from there, the reserve is reached via about 2 km of gravel road. The information describes different ways of finding your way: for the Flottarleden, the focus is on the route via Rådanesjön and Gruksviken; for Sjöbotten, it is on the access road and the distances involved.
Pidis Lada is a well-stocked flea market in Rådanefors, between Färgelanda and Frändefors. Opening information is updated separately on Facebook; check it there before visiting.
