Högsäter offers something for different travel interests: church architecture and earlier history sit alongside swimming, exercise, handicrafts and events. For your planning, it helps to decide on your main focus first. Would you most like to discover a place of cultural and historical interest, spend time by the water, plan a sporting activity or visit on a specific date? The features of each attraction offer practical guidance when making your choice.

Church architecture and earlier history

Högsäter Church stands on a gravel ridge 37 metres above the Valboån, which winds through the landscape. The church was built in the Neo-Gothic style from 1900 to 1902 and was completed for its inauguration in 1902. Its original design has been preserved both inside and out. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; the five-sided chancel narrows towards the east. The floor plan describes the overall shape, while the chancel’s shape further characterises the eastern part of the building. A visit focused on cultural history can therefore centre both on the building’s history around 1900 and on specific architectural features.

Avrättningsplatsen offers a different historical connection: this medieval execution site dates from around 1520 AD. The time separating the medieval site from the church’s construction brings two distinct historical perspectives into view. This makes it possible to distinguish the church’s architecture from the area’s earlier history.

Swimming and exercise

Ragnerudsbadet is a family-friendly swimming area; its sandy beach slopes gently into the water and is particularly suitable for children. Facilities include a jetty, a diving tower, changing rooms and a toilet. Seasonal conditions may vary. If swimming is one of the main reasons for your trip, take this seasonal limitation into account when planning and check the conditions for your visit.

Exercise offers another option: at Allégården in Högsäter, there is a five-kilometre illuminated track for running and roller skiing, maintained by Högsäter Ski Club. Jogging and roller skiing are the specifically named activities. The track’s length and lighting provide practical details if you want to add a sporting activity to your daily plans.

Events, walks and handicrafts

The annual Monster Race takes place at Gena Raceway in Högsäter. If your trip is connected to the race, check the exact event date when planning. Högsäters Hembygdsföreningen also organises walks to interesting places in the surrounding area; you should check the dates for these before your visit as well. These involve two different scheduling considerations: an annual race day on the one hand and scheduled walks on the other.

Handicrafts and handiwork by artisans from Färgelanda Municipality are exhibited and sold at Högsäters bygdegård. Both exhibitions and sales are part of what’s on offer; the fact that the works come from Färgelanda Municipality gives the handicrafts a specific local connection. Those interested in design will find another subject here alongside architecture and history.
