Discover Surahammar: Industrial Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Surahammar
Surahammar combines a strong industrial heritage with natural attractions and trails in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can plan your trip around the themes that interest you most: historic buildings and collections, birdwatching or outdoor activities. The locations and conditions vary considerably.
Industrial history and historic buildings
Sura Church stands on a hill beside the Strömsholm Canal. It was built between 1890 and 1892 in the Neo-Romantic style, based on designs by architect Gustaf Pettersson, and consecrated by Bishop Gottfrid Billing. The choir features a painting completed in 1956 by Nils Aron Berge. It depicts several hundred figures, including local residents and the ironworks.
At Surahammar Industrial Museum, you can follow the production process from pig iron to finished railway wheels. The museum is housed in a workshop building where some of the equipment remains in its original location. A guided tour lasts about an hour. The vehicles on display in the carriage hall include the patron’s formal carriage, the “Kupén” carriage from 1900, a hearse, and the Vaulunder locomotive with two carriages.
The Golden Wheel Motorcycle Museum displays motorcycles from the early 20th century through the 1970s; the collection comprises around 120 objects. The town’s automotive history also goes back a long way: in 1897, engineer Gustav Eriksson built Sweden’s first internal-combustion-engine car in Surahammar. Stenhuset was built in 1847 as a home for six blacksmith families. The former inn and the old works assembly hall, Gyllene Hjulet, have been preserved and feature murals by artist Jerk Werkmäster.
Surahammar Heritage Farm is located by the Kolbäcksån River and consists of three buildings that were moved here. A mechanical arm is also on display there. If this object is a deciding factor in your visit, check its exhibition status in advance.
Nature and birdwatching
Bruksparken is Surahammar’s oldest park. Nearby, Kohagen Nature Reserve has three rest areas with fire pits and views of the Kolbäcksån River. Gnien is a bird sanctuary where the Kolbäcksån widens into a lake. In spring and autumn, many swans, ducks and waders stop at Gnien. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the seasons offer a useful guide for planning.
Seasonal access restrictions apply in parts of the protected area. During these restrictions, visits to the birdwatching tower and boat and canoe trips through the area are permitted. Check the current restrictions when planning so you can take the conditions for your visit into account.
Trails and activities in the surrounding area
Surahammar Golf Club has an 18-hole parkland course at the northern entrance to Surahammar. The mountain bike trails at Lindmuren also start at the golf club. Stage 8 of the Bruksleden trail passes the outskirts of Surahammar after about five kilometres.
The Rövalls- and Stingsmossen protected area nearby is accessible only on foot via the Bruksleden trail.
