Ramnäs Between Industrial Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Ramnäs
Ramnäs combines preserved industrial history with historic buildings, walking trails and paddling routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Ramnäs, your travel interests can help guide you: Would you like to learn more about the area’s former ironworking and architectural history, or are activities on foot and on the water your priority? Specific differences include a walk featuring pictures and Swedish texts, a jetty between two named places, and sections of the Bruksleden and the Strömsholms kanal. You can weigh the local and scenic themes according to your interests.
Industrial history in the Ramnäs bruksområde
The old Kättingsmedjan has been preserved in the Ramnäs bruksområde; Café Kusken is also located there. Järnboden is a 100-metre-long wooden building where bar iron was stored for onward transport in Sweden and around the world. Kättingsmedjan and Järnboden represent different aspects of the iron industry: the work of the forge and the storage of iron for onward transport. Ramnäs guest harbour lies behind Järnboden; showers and toilets are in a small slagstone building.
Church and historic buildings
Of three similar buildings in the area, Hembygdsgården Söderhammar, built in 1897, is the only one that has survived. Ramnäs kyrka was built in the early 15th century by farmers from Ramnäs as a small single-nave stone church without a choir, sacristy or side aisles. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; together with the details about the choir, sacristy and side aisles, this gives a specific description of its basic layout. The two buildings also date from different periods: the church from the early 15th century and Söderhammar from 1897.
Walks and nature
Skyltvandringen in Ramnäs is a walk where visitors learn about the history of various places through pictures and easy-to-understand Swedish texts. The pictures add a visual dimension to the texts; the written information is in Swedish. Spången is an approximately 160-metre-long jetty between the industrial area and the workers’ dwelling Kungshammar on Bergslagsvägen. The area is important for overwintering white-throated dippers. Ramnässkogen Nature Reserve is within walking distance of Ramnäs. Skyltvandringen and Spången offer different points of interest: one presents the history of various places, while the other is a specific jetty between two named points that is also important for overwintering white-throated dippers.
Hiking and paddling routes
When choosing a route, it helps to distinguish between hiking and paddling. The final part of section 8 of the Bruksleden leads to Ramnäs. Section 6 of the Strömsholms kanal is a paddling route from Ramnäs to Surahammar. The Gnien Nature Reserve lies along this section, shortly after leaving Ramnäs; it is a popular place for birdwatching. The Ramnäs–Surahammar paddling route starts and ends in towns with train and bus connections. Check the timetables separately when planning your arrival or onward journey. The routes therefore differ both in how you travel and where they lead: the Bruksleden leads to Ramnäs in its final section, while the paddling route goes from there to Surahammar.
