Hallstahammar offers travelers a variety of ways to explore the area: canal and industrial history, art, nature, cycling and a canoe trip to Strömsholm. If you are looking for a hotel in Hallstahammar, you can start by considering which of these themes you would like to shape your stay. The places and activities lead to different parts of the region—from historic locks and forges to forest trails and waterways.

Locks and industrial history

Sörkvarn is the only triple lock on the Strömsholm Canal. Skantzens sluss, by contrast, is a double lock and an important part of Hallstahammar’s lock area. An exhibition at the Skantzen cultural area is dedicated to the canal’s history. It includes a working lock model and tools used to build the canal. You can book guided tours of the Skantzen cultural area through Svedvi Bergs hembygdsförening.

TrÄngfors smedja also offers a glimpse into local industrial history: its origins date back to 1628. The coal house dates from the 19th century and is one of the few surviving buildings of its kind in Sweden. At the annual TrÄngforsdagen, the forge is demonstrated in operation, with a Lancashire furnace, blower and hammer. For part of the year, guided tours, visits and activities are also offered at the forge. If you would like to see the demonstration at TrÄngforsdagen, check the event dates when planning your trip.

The old TrĂ„ngfors power station is open by appointment. You can arrange a time by calling 0220 – 174 09. The options at these locations differ: an appointment is required for the power station, while activities at the forge are seasonal and TrĂ„ngforsdagen is held annually.

Art and culture in Hallstahammar

Hallstahammars konsthall presents several new exhibitions each year. Art forms include painting, photography, sculpture, film and crafts. The Thore Skogman Museum focuses on records, books, personal belongings, stage clothes and stories about Thore Skogman. The collection helps keep his significant musical legacy accessible.

A route of about five kilometers through Hallstahammar passes public artworks, cultural heritage sites, water and central areas. It is easily accessible and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. The route brings together several aspects of the town’s character. If you are interested in art and history, it offers a different perspective from a visit to the locks or industrial sites.

Nature, cycling and paddling

The Sörkvarnsforsen nature reserve consists of banks covered in deciduous forest and islands in the rapids. The rapids are among the last unmodified stretches of the KolbÀcksÄn. Valstasjön is also notable for its wildlife: it is home to numerous amphibians, especially toads and the endangered great crested newt. The ValstaspÄret trail at Valstasjön is about 3.5 kilometers long, easy to walk and marked with orange markers on the trees.

Those who prefer mountain biking will find a trail at the Motionscentrum in Hallstahammar that runs through the forest and includes singletrack, roots and bends. It is part of Trails of VÀstmanland. The trail description highlights different features from those of ValstaspÄret: here, the focus is on the listed features of the mountain biking trail, while ValstaspÄret is described in terms of its length, markings and ease of access.

Another option is a canoe trip from Hallstahammar to Strömsholm. The launch site is at Sörkvarnsbron, and the trip is estimated to take about four to five hours. Paddlers can take the bus back to Hallstahammar from BorgÄsund or Strömsholm. Check the current timetable if you are planning this return journey. This makes the trip easy to include as a separate, multi-hour activity during your stay.
