Seven kilometres along the river, right through the centre: the Hälsans stig walking trail runs from Älvsbackabron in the east to Lejonströmsbron in the west. It is one practical way to experience Skellefteå on foot. Coastal landscapes, historic sites and activities centred on nature and crafts also shape the range of travel options.

Coast and trails for different plans

Skellefteå Municipality has 531 kilometres of coastline. High cliffs, deep bays, small natural beaches and harbours characterise the stretch of coast along the Gulf of Bothnia. Bjuröklubb is a 919-hectare nature reserve and Natura 2000 site in the municipality. At the lighthouse there, you can watch the seasonal bird migration: large numbers of birds of prey, cranes, swans, geese and small birds head north, especially in April. The exact timing of the migration can vary.

There are also walks with different trail profiles. Hälsans stig runs for seven kilometres through the centre; the Bjuröklubb hiking trail is a 6.2-kilometre circular route, which you can also walk for only half its length. The Naturstigen at Vitberget is five kilometres long and passes through hilly terrain, with a few short, steeper sections. Information boards there cover the landscape, culture and geology. The stated trail lengths can help you choose, without specifying a walking time.

Mineralleden starts at the illuminated Vitberget ski trail in central Skellefteå and passes through varied landscapes to Skellefteå AdventurePark and Varuträsk Vildmarksgruva. The Vitbergsområdet offers nature trails, running and ski trails, an outdoor gym, an obstacle course, a ski slope, a sledding hill and cycling routes. In winter, more than 120 kilometres of cross-country ski trails are groomed across the municipality; check their current condition before your visit.

History, crafts and discoveries

Bonnstan comprises 116 church cottages with a total of 392 rooms and is one of the few preserved church towns in Sweden. As early as the 17th century, it served people from surrounding villages as a gathering place and somewhere to stay overnight. A church fair weekend, a market and a traditional Midsummer celebration are held there every year. Check the dates if you want one of these events to determine when you travel.

Skellefteå Museum is a regional cultural history museum at Nordanå; Nordanå has a history spanning more than 700 years. Handens hus hosts activities for children, craft gatherings and special event days focused on crafts and handicrafts. Programme details may change. Stackgrönnans Båtmuseum offers a different perspective on working life: it displays workboats from an era when boats served as tools of the trade and the main means of transport.

Exploratoriet is a science centre with 800 square metres of exhibition space spread across three floors. Families and the general public can explore technology and science in a playful, interactive way. At interactive stations and in exhibitions, visitors can try experiments, solve challenges and explore phenomena. Sara Kulturhus is one of the tallest timber buildings in the world. The tour offered there lasts about 45 minutes, is conducted in Swedish and English, and ends in the exhibition hall, which visitors can then explore on their own. Check dates and times in advance.

At Varuträsk Vildmarksgruva, visitors can take a self-guided underground tour with protective equipment available to borrow. Afterwards, visitors can search for minerals and rare stones above ground in the Mineral Park. Check booking requirements and seasonal access in advance. Local cuisine and choosing where to stay

Lappvik shares stories about the place, its people and the seasons, alongside meals made with local ingredients, often sourced directly from the farm. Seasonal availability may vary. Lövånger Saluhall is a market hall and shop near the E4 between Umeå and Skellefteå. You can buy locally produced food and small-scale handicraft products there. Nordanågårdens Bistro serves carefully prepared dishes inspired by classic flavours and Swedish food traditions.
