Specific landmarks in Örträsk include a neoclassical church, the Örträsk dam, a historic granary and hiking trails with different routes. The cultural themes range from church architecture and the logging era to a dated building. On the trails, you can distinguish between a route with two named endpoints and a loop trail.

Culture and history

Örträsk Church is one of the best-preserved neoclassical churches in Upper Norrland. This makes both its specific architectural style and its state of preservation central features. For anyone interested in architecture, the church is a clear point of interest among Örträsk’s cultural attractions.

The Örträsk dam is in the Öre River, just below its outlet from the lake. It is part of an area of national interest for cultural heritage and is a notable testament to the logging era. Its location in the river and its historical significance therefore highlight two aspects: the specific waterside location and the history of logging.

A granary dating from 1680 can be seen at the Örträsk local heritage site. It is considered one of the oldest buildings in South Lapland. Together with the church and dam, the granary adds a dated historic building to the area’s cultural history, along with an indication of its age in a regional context.

Hiking trails and getting your bearings

The hiking trails can be distinguished by their routes. The Öre River Trail runs from Lake Örträsk to the mouth of the Öre River. The Örträsk Trail loops around Lake Örträsk. This means there is both a route with the lake and river mouth as its named endpoints and a loop around the lake. Comparing the types of trails gives you a concrete distinction without needing to estimate walking times.

Along the Öre River Trail, there are overnight cabins, barbecue areas, wind shelters, dry toilets and swimming beaches. The trail therefore has various facilities, from overnight accommodation to places to barbecue or swim. When choosing a route, you can consider these facilities along the way as well as the trail’s course.

A separate note concerns the trail to Gaffelberget: in summer, it is wide enough for wheelchairs and strollers, but not as far as the rest area. This limitation is important to keep in mind when planning based on the stated width. The Örträsk dam is clearly visible from the parking lot; the path there is about 200 metres long.

Lakes, river and fishing

Lake Örträsk is the largest lake along the Öre River. The Örträsk Fishing Conservation Area includes parts of the Vargån River. The fast-flowing sections of the Vargån have populations of grayling and trout. For these two fish species, the specified river sections are therefore key: the populations are found in fast-flowing areas, not throughout the river as a whole.

Lake Sandsjön is a large, clear-water lake with fishing for perch, pike, whitefish and trout. The fishing opportunities listed here therefore differ from the fish populations in the Vargån in both the type of water and the species. In the Vargån, grayling and trout are found in fast-flowing sections; at Lake Sandsjön, perch, pike and whitefish are also found alongside trout. You can use the specific descriptions of the waters and fish species as different points of reference for your interest in fishing.
