Ölme offers several points of interest for a stay: the Kummelön nature reserve, with its scenic viewpoints; Ölme kyrka, situated on a hill; and local crafts at the village’s museum shop. When planning your trip, you can decide whether nature, church art or a combination of activities should be the focus.

Experience nature at Kummelön Nature Reserve

Kummelön Nature Reserve is about four kilometres south of Ölme kyrka. From the E18 between Kristinehamn and Karlstad, turn south at the church and follow the signs to the reserve. The church and the signposting provide practical guidance for the journey; the distance is approximate.

In the northern part of the area, by the viewing hill, there is a shelter open to the public. There is also a dry toilet and a barbecue area. These facilities provide practical places to take a break during your visit to the reserve. As well as enjoying the view of the landscape, visitors can plan to stop for a rest at the viewing hill.

A simple floating landing stage is located in the northeast. From there, you can observe aquatic plants and wildlife beneath the water’s surface. From the hill on the promontory, you get a different view: the panorama stretches across the reeds and waters of Ölmeviken. The landing stage and viewpoint offer different perspectives—one draws attention to life in the water, the other to the landscape as a whole.

Ölme kyrka: a hilltop church and an altarpiece

Ölme kyrka stands on a hill surrounded by fields. Inside is a large altarpiece painted by Pehr Högberg in 1798. The church’s setting in open farmland and its historic artwork offer two different reasons to visit: its surroundings and a specific feature of its interior.

Ölme kyrka is also described as a cultural and historical landmark in beautiful surroundings in the account of the Vänerleden stage from Karlstad to Kristinehamn. This means the church is also mentioned in a regional route description. When planning your trip, you can combine this information with a visit to the building, without taking it as a precise indication of the stage’s route.

Walking trails, a fitness track and crafts

There are two different options for getting active: Ölme has a lit fitness track, while easy-to-walk trails in Kummelön Nature Reserve lead north and south from the car park. The fitness track and walking trails are separate options. In Kummelön, you can choose a trail heading north or south, while the fitness track offers another way to be active in Ölme.

Ölmeljus Diversehandel offers a different activity. The museum shop in the village sells crafts from the surrounding area and further afield, and runs candle-making workshops for almost the entire year. Groups of five to ten people can book the workshops. As workshop details may change, it is best to enquire about current dates and details before making plans.

Choose Ölme to suit your travel interests

If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Ölme, the different themes can help with your planning: Kummelön combines walking trails with opportunities to observe the water and enjoy scenic views; Ölme kyrka offers a connection to the landscape and art history; and at Ölmeljus Diversehandel, making candles together is the main activity. Which option best suits your stay depends on how you’d like to spend your time in the area. For a workshop visit, the group size of five to ten people is a practical planning consideration; for Kummelön, its approximate location south of the church and the turnoff from the E18 are useful points of reference.
