Kristinehamn: Trails, Islands and Culture
Accommodation in Kristinehamn
Kristinehamn offers a range of options for planning your days: trails by Lake VĂ€nern, island paths accessed by boat, outdoor art and historic sites. The routes range from short stretches to longer hikes; museums and buildings also tell the story of the townâs history and architecture. When choosing your hotel stay, it helps to decide first which excursions you want to shape your trip. That way, you can focus your plans on nature, art or history.
Hiking Trails by Lake VĂ€nern and on the Islands
The Sannaleden is 6 kilometres long and runs partly along Lake VÀnern. On the Three Islands Trail, footbridges connect VÄlön, Kalvön and Sibberön; the route is 4 kilometres each way. A boat trip is required for this trail. In summer, the BÄtbuss 97 runs from VÄlösund Quay in the Kristinehamn archipelago. Check the timetable before planning your excursion: the boat trip is part of navigating this route.
A 2.5-kilometre hiking trail starts at the veranda of Café Picasso and is open to the public year-round. Several rest stops offer a chance to pause along the way; there is a barbecue area and a toilet at the starting point. A longer option is a 30-kilometre hiking trail through varied landscapes of small ponds and lakes, marshland, forests and pastureland. The distance information helps you distinguish between shorter and longer hikes when planning.
Breeding and resting wetland birds are an important feature of the Inre Kilsviken Nature Reserve. Marked trails, three birdwatching towers and rest stops add to the nature experience; if these facilities are important for your visit, check the latest visitor information beforehand. About 30 kilometres south of Kristinehamn, Dyrön Nature Reserve combines rocky shores, bodies of water, forests and a traditional cultural landscape. In Nötön-Ă rĂ„sviken Nature Reserve, youâll find the quality-assured VĂ€rmlandsleder trails Arskagsleden, Nötöleden and PrĂ€stöleden.
Art and Town History
The Picasso sculpture stands by Lake VÀnern in Kristinehamn. It is 15 metres high and was inaugurated in 1965. An outdoor exhibition uses signs to provide information about the artwork and its history. A section of the VÀnerleden can be cycled near the sculpture. You can explore the VÄlösundet promenade on foot; the archipelago in Lake VÀnern can also be experienced by boat or on foot.
Kristinehamns Historiska is housed in a renovated former stable building at WahlundsgĂ„rden in the town centre. The permanent historical exhibition covers the townâs development through ironworking. Guided tours explain how and why Kristinehamn became a town. Kristinehamn Church also tells the story of a distinctive period in architectural history: it was inaugurated in 1858 and represents the breakthrough of Neo-Gothic architecture in Sweden. Tours can be booked through the parish office; check availability in advance.
The JĂ€rsberg Runestone is located southeast of Kristinehamn and bears an inscription from the 5th century. It stands beside Letstigen, an old route that ran from the Lake MĂ€laren region through VĂ€rmland and on to Vestfold in Norway. This connection also makes the site interesting for travellers looking for historical traces not only in buildings, but also in the landscape.
Visits and Local Impressions
Kristinehamns HembygdsgÄrd is a historic site with old buildings, local history and a green park. The grounds are open to the public at all times. Guided tours of LundbomsgÄrden, the mill and MjölnargÄrden, among other places, can be booked; check availability before making plans. In the VÄgen district, a market day featuring handicrafts and locally produced food takes place on the last Saturday of every month.
In summer, Ăstervik Chapel and the museum in the former dairy building are open to visitors. The chapel stands on a hill overlooking Varnumsviken. When visiting Kristinehamns konstmuseum, bear in mind the current exhibition status: the permanent exhibition is temporarily closed while the building is being renovated. It features several artists from the Kristinehamn art community, as well as scholarship recipients with roots in VĂ€rmland and Kristinehamn.
