Ljusterö: Nature, Hiking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Ljusterö
Ljusterö offers a range of ways to plan a trip: a nature reserve, hiking trails, swimming spots and cultural attractions. If you are looking for a hotel on Ljusterö, you can plan your stay around the themes that interest you most. Specific places and trail information can help you make nature, outdoor activities and culture the focus of your trip.
Nature Reserve and Archipelago
The Själbottna-Östra Lagnö Nature Reserve has hiking trails where you can explore the natural landscape. There are also practical facilities for visitors: the reserve has a fishing jetty and wheelchair-accessible toilets. At Brännholmen, the seaward-facing tip, you can swim from rocks smoothed by the inland ice.
The reserve is also a habitat for birds: many species breed there. East of Skakroksudden, you can find, among others, ruddy turnstones, oystercatchers and gulls. Östra Lagnö is part of Ljusterö and lies at its outermost point towards the Åland Sea. If you would like to take in the view across the landscape, there is a viewpoint on Ljusterö Huvud. On a clear day, you can see three miles across the archipelago from there.
Hiking Trails with Different Details
The Pilgrimsleden Ljusterö is 2.6 kilometres long, hilly and challenging. Allow at least around an hour for the route. There are six stations along the way. Another nature trail is part of the Natur- och Sagostigen, which starts at Granliden. This trail has four- and six-kilometre options. As details may change, check the latest information before setting out.
The information about the two trails offers different points of reference for planning: for the Pilgrimsleden, details include not only the length but also the terrain and approximate minimum walking time; the nature trail offers two route lengths. On the Pilgrimsleden, a culturally protected stone monument with boundary stones marks the borders between the properties of Sundvik, Östanå Gods and the municipality of Ljusterö kulla. The monument is associated with the land consolidation of 1853.
In addition to Brännholmen, there is the public swimming area Lilla badberget in Linanäs, maintained by the municipality. If you are planning a visit, check the latest information about the facilities. Kayaking is another option to consider when planning your trip: kayaks are available for hire at several places around Ljusterö. Check availability in advance.
Church, Museum and Art
The white-painted, octagonal wooden church, Ljusterö kyrka, is near Mellansjö, by Kyrksjön, in the centre of Ljusterö. The chapel from which the present-day church developed was completely rebuilt towards the end of the 19th century to create the church as it stands today. Together with the stations along the Pilgrimsleden, it makes the island’s cultural history a distinct focus alongside its trails and natural attractions.
The Ljusterö hembygdsmuseum is housed in an 18th-century residence originally built in Vadholma. Its collection includes traditional clothing, engagement gifts, photographs and household items. The Ljusterö Konsthall focuses on art and the archipelago: it exhibits Swedish and international art, crafts and photography related to the archipelago.
These different highlights may help you decide what to include in your trip: natural landscapes and birdlife, a hiking route with specific trail information, or a visit to the church, museum and art gallery.
