Discover Åkersberga
Accommodation in Åkersberga
Åkersberga offers several starting points for planning a stay: the Åkers canal and its long history, Ekbacken as Österåker’s local heritage park, and gardens and recreation areas. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether cultural history, a walk along the canal or outdoor activities should be the focus. The places and activities show different sides of the destination.
Canal history and routes
The Åkers canal is designated as a national interest for cultural heritage conservation. It is also a remnant of Långhundraleden, a historic waterway that ran through Österåker between Uppsala and the Baltic Sea during the Bronze Age, the Viking Age and into the Middle Ages. The canal’s history therefore spans several eras and places Åkersberga in a broader regional context.
The route along the canal is also a practical point of reference for planning your day: Hälsans stig is a six-kilometre circular route. Its stated length gives you a set distance to work with if you’d like to include a walk in your stay. Another event by the canal is Kanalens dag, held every year in late August at the Åkers canal and Ekbacken. The exact event dates and programme may vary; check the dates before your trip.
Local heritage park, museum and garden
Ekbacken is Österåker’s local heritage park. The Båtmansmuseet at Ekbacken opened in 1992 and shows how a boatman’s family lived in the past. Ekbacken is also home to Vita huset, built in the 18th century. Together, the museum and historic building offer two different perspectives on the past: family life in earlier times and the history of a house’s construction.
Another cultural point of interest is the show garden at Länsmansgården. It includes the children’s garden, Barnens trädgård, and a dahlia bed with about 100 different named varieties. The two parts of the garden have different focuses: one is a garden for children, while the other showcases the variety of dahlias.
Järnvägsparken is located by Åkersberga station. Its playground features a playful miniature of Tuppen. This small, locally distinctive feature adds another point of interest near the station to the museum and garden themes.
Nature and activities in Åkersberga
The Hacksta recreation area has mountain biking trails and illuminated exercise trails. You’ll also find a disc golf course and an outdoor fitness area there. This recreation area offers a range of activities: walking, mountain biking, disc golf and outdoor workouts.
Röllingby backar offers a different perspective on the landscape. The hills extend into Åkersberga’s built-up area and are part of the Tärnan core area in Angarnkilen. Hacksta is characterised by its specifically named sports and activity facilities; Röllingby backar adds a landscape that reaches into the built-up area.
Getting there and finding your way
Åkersberga is served by the Roslagsbanan from Stockholm östra. From the station, buses continue to Danderyd, Ljusterö and Norrtälje. If you’re planning your journey by train and bus, check the timetables for your travel date. This lets you plan the train ride and onward bus connection as separate parts of your journey.
The guest harbour on the Åkers canal is another useful point of reference: it is located in the middle of Åkersberga, and you can walk from the boat to the town centre. When choosing where to stay, you can first consider what matters to you—canal history, cultural attractions, activities or travelling by train and bus—and then look for a hotel in Åkersberga that suits your needs.
