There are several ways to plan a trip to Väddö: walking and hiking trails along the Väddö Canal, cultural history and nature watching. If you’re looking for a hotel in Väddö, you can first consider which of these interests you’d like to shape your stay. The route descriptions have clearly named starting and finishing points; cultural topics range from maritime history to archaeological traces. This makes it easy to tailor your choices to the purpose of your trip.

Trails along the Väddö Canal

A hiking trail about 4 kilometres long follows the Väddö Canal from Kaplansbacken at the Roslagen Maritime Museum to Bagghus. The approximate distance helps you plan how to fit this trail into your day. Stage 10 of the Roslagsleden begins at Bagghusbron and follows the canal to Älmsta. A walking trail follows the Väddö Canal from Älmsta in the north to Bagghus in the south. The starting and finishing points provide helpful guidance when choosing a route to suit your planned direction.

Maritime history and cultural heritage

The Roslagen Maritime Museum in Älmsta presents Roslagen’s maritime traditions, from the Viking Age to modern ferry traffic. Four medieval sculptures from the old church have been preserved in Väddö Church. Kista Hembygdsgård is a historic complex of 21 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries; from there, a cultural heritage trail leads to a burial ground dating from the Late Iron Age. Each offers a different perspective: the museum covers the span from early maritime traditions to modern ferry traffic, while the church, the historic complex and the trail focus on sculptures, architectural history and archaeology.

Nature watching and woodland

In autumn, Rönnskärs udde Nature Reserve is an important area for observing migrating birds. Near Väddö, the small Väddö prästgård Nature Reserve is also characterised by coniferous forest and areas of wet swamp woodland. The nature experiences differ in focus: seasonal bird migration takes centre stage at Rönnskärs udde, while coniferous forest and wet woodland define the character of Väddö prästgård.

Gardens, refreshments and activities

Kröns Trädgård is a garden centre on Väddö, just outside Älmsta. The site is easily accessible for wheelchair users and people using walking frames. Kröns Kök at Kröns Trädgård serves homemade fika. A visit to the garden centre can therefore be combined with a break on site.
