Grisslehamn – Coastal Trails, Cultural History and Hotels
Accommodation in Grisslehamn
In Grisslehamn, the coastal route of Roslagsleden, the history of postal traffic across the Åland Sea and Albert Engström’s cultural legacy come together. These highlights offer different ways to plan your stay: the long-distance trail, the Postrodden or Engström’s museum and studio.
Roslagsleden and the Coastal Route
The Roslagsleden long-distance trail runs from Danderyd to Grisslehamn and is part of the European long-distance trail E6. On its way to Grisslehamn, it follows the shoreline into the town. These details offer two different points of reference: Danderyd marks the starting point of the described long-distance trail route, while the shoreline describes the trail’s course as it reaches Grisslehamn. Those interested in long-distance trails will find both a connection to the E6 and a coastal route leading into town.
Ferry Service, Harbour and Sailing School
The M/S Eckerö operates daily between Grisslehamn in Roslagen and Eckerö in Åland. If the ferry crossing is part of your travel plans, check the operator’s timetable and service information in advance. Grisslehamn’s fishing harbour has 15 guest berths for boats. As harbour capacity and facilities may change, it is worth checking the latest harbour information before your trip.
Every summer, the Grisslehamns Motor- och Segelsällskap runs a sailing school for children, young people and adults. The sailing school is based in Ornöviken; specific course and meeting arrangements may vary. Alongside long-distance hiking, sailing and ferry services are therefore among the town’s maritime highlights.
The Postrodden and the History of Travel
The Postrodden is an annual competition commemorating the centuries-long obligation of the farmers of Väddö and Eckerö to transport mail and passengers across the Åland Sea. It has been held every year since 1974, usually in June. The Postrodden is a popular festival at its starting and finishing points; the exact programme varies. If you would like to plan your stay around the competition, check the dates for the relevant year.
Grisslehamns Posthus also tells the story of earlier forms of travel: it was built in 1755–1756 as a post house and inn. The upper floor had rooms for travellers. In addition to serving postal traffic, the building was therefore also associated with accommodating travellers. Borgen was built as a barracks in 1812. After the military left Grisslehamn in 1869, Borgen became a guesthouse.
Albert Engström, Studio and Chapel
The Albert Engström Museum is housed in the former home of the artist, writer and satirist Albert Engström in Grisslehamn. It provides information about his artistic work and his life as an influential storyteller and public commentator. Albert Engström’s studio is a listed building of cultural and historical value, perched on a cliff near the sea outside Grisslehamn. The studio’s rooms have remained largely unchanged since Engström’s death in 1940. The museum and studio thus offer different perspectives: the museum focuses on his work and life, while the studio preserves much of its original layout.
Grisslehamn Chapel was consecrated on 26 September 1909. Its altarpiece was inspired by the archipelago and its inhabitants. Thus, alongside Engström’s life story, the archipelago landscape also emerges as a distinct cultural motif.
Seabird Watching
Grisslehamn is a good place for seabird watching, especially in September and October. Conditions and sightings may vary. These months therefore provide a seasonal guide, but do not guarantee specific sightings.
