Trosa: Archipelago, Nature and History
Accommodation in Trosa
The varied landscape of Trosa Municipality includes open plains, moraine hills, glacial ridges and rocky outcrops, extending into an archipelago landscape. The municipality has 16 nature reserves. This number may change as new areas are designated. Each place offers a different combination of nature and cultural experiences, from marked hiking trails to traces of historic crafts and church history.
Nature Reserves and Trails
Kråmö Nature Reserve offers swimming from smooth rocks and small beaches, as well as forest trails and marked paths suitable for walking. Swimming opportunities depend on the weather and season; trails may be affected seasonally. On Bokö-Askö, a two-kilometre trail passes through an old cultural landscape. The area is accessible by boat and offers swimming along the rocky coast.
Tomtaklintskogen has marked hiking trails and a diverse range of flora and fauna. By contrast, there are no marked trails in Luckebol Nature Reserve: visitors explore the area on their own, following existing paths and routes. Its landscapes range from old-growth pine forest and mixed coniferous and deciduous woodland to small swamp forests, leafy woodland edges, oak and hazel stands, and a small meadow. So, if you are looking for a marked route, Tomtaklintskogen is one option, while Luckebol requires you to find your way along existing paths.
Lånestaheden is a special place where nature and archaeology come together: its calcareous soil supports several rare plant species. The nature reserve is also considered one of the richest archaeological sites in Södermanland. Deciduous woodland, pastures, coastal meadows, wetlands and lakes shape the landscape of the Tullgarn och Furholmen area, along with a long coastline dotted with small islands and skerries. Furholmen has calcareous rock formations and a rich flora that includes several rare species.
A trail from Tullgarn Palace passes Västerviken, a good spot for birdwatching, and runs through oak pastures to viewpoints overlooking Tullgarnsviken. Nynäs Nature Reserve offers swimming along the coast, boat moorings, walking trails and fishing subject to special rules. Cross-country skiing is also available in winter. The Sörmlandsleden trail has shorter and longer routes through the reserve, as well as shelters and barbecue areas.
Planning and Seasonal Information
Stages 53 to 56 of the Sörmlandsleden trail pass through Trosa Municipality; you can also hike this long-distance trail on Sävö. Check trail conditions before setting out. For planning and navigation, the Naturkartan map for Trosa includes nature reserves, Natura 2000 sites, and cycling, mountain biking and hiking trails; map content may be updated.
In summer, the archipelago ferry service runs to the islands of Kråmö and Askö. Check the current timetable before travelling. The Vitalis recreation area offers activities for cyclists all year round, although some activities may be affected by seasonal conditions. It has an approximately 1.7-kilometre mountain bike trail rated blue, with green sections. Bergs Gård MTB-arena has approximately 35 kilometres of trails. These figures describe different scales; trail conditions may change. Another option is the approximately 20-kilometre Hembygdsrundan, a cycling orienteering route run by the HittaUt activity initiative, passing through Trosa, Vagnhärad and Västerljung. The route and checkpoints may be updated.
Town History and Culture
A self-guided audio tour through central Trosa takes about an hour and features historical images. Garvaregården, which houses the Trosa City Museum, is also in the town centre. The site includes a tanner’s house and workshop, offering a glimpse of a historic craftsman’s premises. Opening hours may vary by season. A small museum on Sävö explores the history of the pilot service; its opening arrangements may also vary by season. KonstTriangeln is an art trail in the municipality created by and for local artists. Dates vary from year to year.
The municipality’s churches reflect different periods in history. The tower and vaults of Vagnhärad Church were probably built in the mid-15th century; the church also houses a sculpture of Mary and a 15th-century altarpiece. Trosa stadskyrka was completed in 1710 and consecrated in 1711. The oldest part of Västerljung Church dates from the 12th century. Its altarpiece was made in Lübeck towards the end of the 15th century. Trosa lands kyrka was built north of Trosa in the 13th century. It includes a chapel probably built in the 1420s, which contains a preserved image of Saint Anne. These dates show that visiting different churches can take you through very different periods.
