Tomelilla combines insights into local history with culture, exercise and green spaces. Stadsparken is in the centre; nature reserves extend right up to the edge of the built-up area or lie a few kilometres away. Public art and the GPS-guided Tomelillarundan add to the cultural offerings. You can tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.

Green spaces in town and nature near Tomelilla

Stadsparken is in the centre of Tomelilla. More than 200 trees shape the park, and there is a pond in its northern part. Since the 1920s, it has been a popular place for walks and a meeting point on festive days. It provides a green focal point in the heart of town; the pond and trees also give the park distinctive features to look out for as you explore.

Skogsbacken med Väladalen is a municipal nature reserve right next to Tomelilla’s built-up area. Kronoskogen is also in Tomelilla Municipality, but a few kilometres outside the town. The nature reserve borders the Tosselilla leisure park and the Svampabanan race track and offers good opportunities for recreation. These details describe different locations: the centrally located park, a protected area right by the built-up area and another nature reserve outside Tomelilla.

Art and local history

Tomelilla konsthall was built in 1965 and was one of Sweden’s first rural art galleries. The statue Artemis, donated by Carl Milles, stands in the market square. Another sculpture, Den onämnbare, was created by Peter Tillberg in 1982 and is about four metres high. It is located at the entrance to the town hall; as its location may change, check where it is placed before your visit.

The market is also part of local history: it is an old tradition that dates back to 1871. A map from 1892 documents various businesses and buildings in Tomelilla. These include the innkeeper Jeppsson’s then-new hotel building on the market square, the post office and the present-day railway station. The hotel building is a historical reference shown on the map, not a statement about current hotel availability.

Cultural offerings and events

The Kulturhuset in Tomelilla offers a varied cultural programme featuring lectures, theatre performances and music evenings. For example, all public areas are accessible by lift. If accessibility is important for your visit, check the details in advance.

The Jazz Archive preserves a personal collection of swing and big band jazz, focusing on American jazz from 1940 to 1960. The programme evenings are open to everyone, and schedules are seasonal. Plan your visit around the relevant dates. Tomelilla’s cultural life offers different perspectives: from the archive’s focus on a particular period in jazz to the lectures, theatre performances and music evenings at the Kulturhuset.

Leisure, exercise and water

Aktivitetsparken has a skate park and an outdoor table tennis table. You can play tennis or basketball for free without a reservation. The outdoor gym at Kastanjeskolan is located between an artificial turf field and the Hiet woodland. These facilities offer different kinds of activity: outdoor exercise, ball games or workouts at a location between a sports field and woodland.

Österlenbadet has a 25-metre pool, a children’s pool and a combined pool with warmer water. There is also a whirlpool, a dry sauna, a steam sauna and a cold-water bath. The programme includes swimming lessons and early-morning swimming, as well as regular water aerobics and Hydrohex water aerobics with video instructions. The facilities therefore offer both pools and heat experiences, as well as different forms of water aerobics. Check current opening hours and programme times for your travel date.

Explore Tomelilla digitally and through its history

The GPS-guided Tomelillarundan in the Shuttle app presents the history, development and present-day character of Tomelilla’s built-up area through its buildings, works of art and locations. The app can be downloaded for free. Together with the 1892 map, the Tomelillarundan offers two different ways to explore local history: the map records buildings and businesses at a particular point in time, while the app presents the area’s history, development and present-day character through a variety of locations, works of art and buildings.
