Andrarum brings together the history of alum mining, hiking trails, a rural cultural landscape and a protected river area. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Andrarum, these different attractions can help you decide: Would you like to explore the former alum works, follow paths through the countryside, or discover the surviving traces of the historic village? The sights and routes offer some specific points to consider.

Location and landscape

Andrarum lies in the gently rolling landscape of Albo härad, at the southernmost extension of Linderödsåsen. Around the village, grazed pastures are interspersed with groups of deciduous and coniferous trees. The Verkeån Nature Reserve follows a relatively clean river with low nutrient levels. Its diverse fish fauna includes trout, bullhead, minnow, brook lamprey, pike and eel. Birds found in the area include the white-throated dipper, grey wagtail and kingfisher. So, alongside its eventful history, the river and landscape are also attractions in their own right for a stay in Andrarum.

The alum works and industrial history

Andrarums alunbruk was founded by Jochum Beck in 1637. The history of the alum works can also be seen in the surviving parts of the complex: these include numerous heaps of burnt alum shale, open mine shafts, the remains of the last boiling house and several well-preserved buildings. The alum works is protected as an ancient monument and lies within the Verkeån Nature Reserve. Those interested in the village’s past will find not only a founding date here, but also tangible traces of its former operations in the landscape.

The historic picture is completed by the church village of Andrarum. The vicarage, the sexton’s house and several well-preserved houses with the character of the early 19th century have survived. A long, beautiful avenue connects the village with Christinehof and points to the close historical connection between Andrarum and the area’s defining estate. Together with the alum works buildings, these structures show different aspects of the local heritage: the history of work at the alum works and the character of the historic village.

Two hiking trails, different distances

The 19-kilometre Backaleden runs from Andrarums alunbruk via Brösarp to Haväng on the coast. The Hallamöllaleden is shorter, at 8.5 kilometres; it starts in Christinehof, runs via Andrarums alunbruk along the Verkeån to Hallamölla, Verkafuret and Verkasjön, and then returns to the alum works and Christinehof. The routes can be distinguished by their length and the waypoints listed: the Backaleden ends at the coast, while the Hallamöllaleden loop described here returns to its starting points. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Christinehof and the history of the surrounding area

Christinehof was built between 1737 and 1741 in the German Baroque style, with Caroline elements. The ground floor of the castle houses an exhibition presenting the building and its history. The estate is also a landmark along the long avenue between Christinehof and the village of Andrarum. This links the castle’s architectural history with the village’s historic relationship to the estate that shaped the area. If you’re more interested in architectural history than in the surviving alum works complex, Christinehof offers another way to explore Andrarum’s cultural landscape.

The Verkeån and Hallamölla

The river landscape can also be explored around Hallamölla. The watermill has been in existence since the 15th century and is put back into operation every year on Möllornas dag. Hallamölla lies a few kilometres downstream from Andrarums alunbruk, where the water plunges a total of 23 metres over five rapids. The mill and the rapids bring together two distinct features: a historic building and a striking natural feature along the river. If you’d like to plan your trip around Möllornas dag, check the event dates in advance.

When choosing what to visit, you can weigh up several clearly distinct interests: the alum works and its surviving traces, the two hiking trails of different lengths, the historic church village, and the river landscape around the Verkeån and Hallamölla. These places and attractions give you a concrete basis for considering Andrarum as part of your travel plans and looking for hotels for your stay.
